PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's lacrosse team's defense held Dartmouth below its season-scoring average of nine goals to lead the Bears to an 8-5 Ivy League win on Saturday at Stevenson-Pincince Field. Sophomore Rose Mangiarotti (Locust Valley, N.Y.) and freshman Zoe Verni (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) paced the Bears' offense with two goals apiece. The victory marks Brown's first over Dartmouth since 2008, which was also an 8-5 showing.
After Dartmouth (6-8, 2-4 Ivy League) scored two-straight goals to open the game, the Bears' (6-8, 1-5 Ivy League) defense held the Big Green scoreless for the next 33 minutes, all while taking a 4-2 lead into halftime.
Mangiarotti got the scoring started for Brown at 21:35 when junior Jillian Lee (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) caused a turnover in the defense end, and rushed the ball up-field where she fed Mangiarotti who was cutting to the net for the score. Senior Dianne Vitkus (Skaneateles, N.Y.) followed shortly after at 20:44 with a free position tally to knot the score (2-2).
Verni scored the next two goals to close the half on a 4-2 Brown advantage. The rookie's first score came at 6:37 with senior Lauren Toy (Kentfield, Calif.) providing the assist, while her second tally was a free position goal with just .07 remaining in the opening stanza.
The Big Green opened the second half much like they started the game, scoring two straight, bringing the score to 4-4.
From there Brown would tally four unanswered goals and again hold Dartmouth in a scoring drought to take the conference win.
Mangiarotti again started the goal scoring, this time at 18:39 with a pass from Vitkus. Junior Kerianne Hunt (Alamo, Calif.) next picked up her ninth goal of the year on a free position score at 11:38 to give the Bears a two-goal lead (6-4). Freshman Hafsa Moinuddin (Cheshire, Conn.) registered a goal at 9:52 to keep her point-streak alive at 10 games. Toy recorded the last Brown goal of the game at 5:02 on a free position shot.
Jaclyn Leto closed out the game's scoring at 4:06 on a free position shot for Dartmouth.
Senior Victoria Holland (Huntington, N.Y.) recorded seven saves in the win while Charlotte Wahle of Dartmouth tallied four stops.
Brown outshot Dartmouth 18-13 in the contest. The draw controls were split evenly between the two teams, each squad winning seven. The Bears were 14-for-16 on clears while Dartmouth was 11-for-13. Brown went 4-for-8 on free position shots while Dartmouth was 1-for-3.
The Bears close out the regular season at Stevenson-Pincince on Saturday, April 30 against No. 10 Princeton at 1:00 p.m. The game will be Brown's Senior Day where seniors Rebecca Dahle, Victoria Holland, Sarah Nesi, Lauren Toy, Dianne Vitkus and Richael Walsh will be honored prior to the start of the game. Saturday's contest will also be streamed live on the ILDN and ESPN3.
