PRINCETON, N.J. – Junior Justin Staudenmayer advanced to Sunday's semifinals and punched his ticket to the 2016 NCAA Championships to lead Brown University wrestling on day one of the 112th Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Championships on Saturday at Princeton University's Jadwin Gymnasium.
Staudenmayer (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) also an NCAA qualifier in 2015, won two straight bouts on Saturday to advance to Sunday's semifinals. He has ensured himself of the top-six finish that he needed in the 157-pound weight class to claim one of the EIWA's automatic qualifying spots into the NCAAs.
The No. 3 seed at 157 lbs., Staudenmayer opened action at the tournament with a 5-1 win via decision over Drew Daniels of Navy in the round of 16. He topped No. 6 seed Ian Brown of Lehigh in the quarterfinals, 3-2, in the second tiebreaker session, and he will face No. 2 seed John Boyle of American in the semifinals.
Junior Steven Galiardo (Chicago, Ill.) remained in contention at 149 lbs., notching a 2-1 record on Saturday. Seeded No. 4 at 149 lbs., Galiardo has solidified a second top-8 finish after placing eighth at EIWAs a season ago. The EIWA holds five automatic qualifiers to NCAAs at 149 lbs.
Galiardo pinned Sacred Heart's Brandon Levesque in 4:28 in the round of 16 before dropping a 3-2 decision to No. 5 seed Joe Galasso of Cornell in the quarterfinals. He topped Harvard's Patrick Hogan, 9-7, in consolation competition and will meet Matt Kelly of Army West Point in another consolation bout on Sunday.
Three other Bears – sophomore Zeke Salvo (Baltimore, Md.), freshman Jon Viruet (Springfield, Mass.), and senior Augustus Marker (Castle Rock, Colo.) – each picked up one win on the day.
Salvo, making his second appearance at EIWAs, beat Hofstra's Marcus Begay at 133 lbs. in the consolation via technical fall, 16-1. Viruet defeated Bucknell's Robert Schlitt in the round of 16, 7-4. Marker, competing at EIWAs for the fourth time, earned a fall over Harvard's Josh Popple in 4:11 in consolation action.
Through one day of competition, Brown stands in 14th place out of 16 schools in the team competition with 13 points. Cornell leads the team standings with 91.5 points with Lehigh following in second (82.5 points) and Bucknell sitting in third (55).
