Alexander Scores 1000th Point, Women's Hoops Beats Columbia, 91-64

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior guard Jordin Alexander scored her 1,000th career point, and she and three other Bears scored in double figures as Brown University women's basketball beat Columbia University, 91-64, at the Pizzitola Sports Center on Friday night.
"We played well in all four quarters and had contributions from everyone," Brown head coach Sarah Behn said. "We've had our trial and tribulations, but we certainly showed up tonight and played all four quarters."
Alexander scored her 1,000th career point and became the 19th 1,000-point scorer in program history when she hit a jumper along the left baseline with 7:16 to play in the game. With 1,002 career points she is tied for 18th all-time at Brown in career scoring.
"To get 1000 points in college in three – almost two and a half – seasons is pretty remarkable," Behn said. "Jordin is a great player. I'm really proud of her, and I feel fortunate to have coached her. She was terrific, and the whole program is very happy for her."
The Bears (14-13, 2-11 Ivy) gained a 42-24 halftime lead, closing the half on a 14-0 run, and built an advantage as large as 32 points at 69-37 early in the fourth quarter on their way to their second win of the season over the Lions (12-16, 1-12 Ivy). Brown won at Columbia, 73-63, on Feb. 6 and swept the Lions for the first time since the 2011-12 season.
Junior guard Rebecca Musgrove (Plainview, N.Y.) and freshman guard Shayna Mehta each scored a game-high 18 points. Musgrove shot 6-of-10 from the floor and 3-of-4 from 3-point distance, to go with five assists, while Mehta hit 7-of-11 shots from the field and 4-of-8 from downtown.
Freshman forward Erika Steeves (Montreal, Quebec) totaled 14 points, six rebounds, and four steals, connecting on 4-of-6 shots from behind the arc.
Alexander finished the night with 12 points and five assists. In addition to tomorrow night's season finale, she will have the 2016-17 season to add to her career point total as she will play as a graduate student at Florida Gulf Coast University.
As a team, Brown shot 13-of-23 from 3-point distance (56.5 percent), making a season-high 13 triples and knocking down 7-of-10 such shots in the second half.
The Bears opened the game with a 17-7 lead with 3:30 to go in the first quarter as Steeves accounted for eight points, including back-to-back 3-pointers to start the contest. Musgrove capped the run with a corner trey. Brown maintained a 23-16 lead through one quarter after Mehta netted four points in the frame's final 33 seconds.
Brown still led 28-24 with Steeves hitting another 3-pointer early in the second quarter before the Bears closed the half on a 14-0 run over the last 5:39. Mehta and Musgrove initiated the streak with consecutive triples before sophomore Janie White (Clarksville, Tenn.) connected on an elbow jumper.
Musgrove and sophomore Kennedy Martin (Los Angeles, Calif.) continued the run with back-to-back second-chance baskets prior to a layup from senior Natalie Ball (Orlando, Fla.) off a dish inside from Mehta that put the Bears up 42-24 at the break.
In the first half, the Bears shot 17-of-32 (53.1 percent) from the field and 6-of-13 from 3-point distance (46.2 percent) while holding the Lions to 9-of-32 shooting (28.1 percent).
The Bears staked themselves to a 58-30 advantage just over four minutes into the second half behind a 16-4 spurt that included a 3-pointer from both Mehta and Steeves. Brown led 67-37 at the end of the third stanza as Mehta, Musgrove, and White each nailed a trey inside of the quarter's last three minutes.
A pair of free throws from White extended Brown's lead to its largest at 32 points, 69-37, with 9:12 to play. Alexander kept the hosts' lead at 30 points 73-43, with her milestone-reaching baseline jumper.
Down the stretch, sophomore Megan Reilly (Norwood, N.J.) hit a corner triple, senior Ellise Sharpe (Tipp City, Ohio) converted a fast-break layup, and freshman Melissa Heath (Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J.) made a baseline jump shot.
For Columbia, Tori Oliver and Alexa Giuliano each scored 11 points. Sara Mead grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.
Next, Brown concludes its regular season tomorrow vs. Cornell University on Saturday at 6 p.m.
