
Men's Hockey Set to Host No. 15/14 Union (Fri.), RPI (Sat.)

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown men's hockey team will return to Meehan Auditorium this weekend when the Bears play host to No. 15/14 Union on Friday night and Rensselaer on Saturday afternoon. Links to live video and live stats will be available at www.brownbears.com.

Last Time Out
Brown topped Army West Point, 3-1, on the road last Saturday in the team's only contest of the week. Charlie Corcoran netted a pair of goals, including the game winner, while Sam Lafferty (1-2-3) and Max Willman (0-2-2) also had multiple-point games. Rookie Gavin Nieto stopped 22 shots, including all 11 in the third period, for his first collegiate win. Brown outshot Army, 35-23.
Scouting Union
Union (10-3-2, 6-1-1) heads into Providence after sweeping a pair of road ECAC games at Princeton, 7-3, and Quinnipiac, 5-2, last weekend. The Dutchmen are ranked second in the conference standings with 13 points and boast the second-best scoring offense in the ECAC at 4.00 goals per game. Mike Vecchione (16-15-31) and Spencer Foo (7-19-26) are ranked first and second, respectively, in conference scoring. Alex Sakellaropoulos is 9-1-1 in net with a 2.62 goals-against average and .914 save percentage. Union has scored at least four goals in 11 out of the last 15 games played.
Brown vs. Union All-Time
Friday's game will mark the 52nd meeting between Brown and Union, dating back to a 3-2 Union victory on December 30, 1989. The Bears hold a 23-17-12 series advantage, but dropped a back-and-forth battle on the road earlier this season, falling 6-4. Charlie Corcoran scored a pair of goals in the loss, while Sam Lafferty posted three assists.
Scouting RPI
Rensselaer (3-14-1, 1-7-0) is 1-9 over the last 10 games since the Engineers topped Brown at the beginning of November. Most recently, RPI dropped a pair of road games at Quinnipiac, 4-1, and Princeton, 6-5 (OT), last weekend. Evan Tironese leads the team with 16 assists and 20 points, while Jared Wilson heads into the weekend with eight goals. Sophomores Chase Perry and Cam Hackett have split time in net, but Hackett has started the last three games and enters Friday's game with a 3.29 GAA and a .910 save percentage. RPI is averaging 2.11 goals per game and ranks fifth in the ECAC on the power play at 17.4 percent.
Brown vs. RPI All-Time
Brown and Rensselaer have met 98 times, dating back to a 5-0 Brown win during the 1951-52 season. The Engineers currently lead the all-time series, 63-25-9. RPI topped Brown, 3-1, at home in the first meeting of the season. Brent Beaudoin scored the lone goal for the Bears in the third period.
Corcoran Nets Pair
Charlie Corcoran scored a pair of goals to lead Brown to a 3-1 road win at Army West Point, scoring multiple goals for the second time this season. He previously scored twice in a loss at Union and currently leads the team with six goals.
First Career Win
Rookie goalie Gavin Nieto earned his first collegiate win at Army, 3-1, in early December. He stopped 22 shots in the win, including all 11 in the third period with a one-goal lead, and the only goal allowed came on a 4-on-3 situation.
Helping Out
Sam Lafferty is ranked 10th in the nation with 1.00 assists per game. Lafferty also ranks second in assist scoring (1.33 APG) in ECAC contests. He set a career high with three helpers in the loss at Union (11/5).
Next Up
After a two-week break, the Bears will return to action on Dec. 30-31 at the Arizona State Desert Classic.
