PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Sophomore Cara Najjar's (Stoneham, Mass.) first goal of the season came just 18 seconds into the third period and tied the game for the Brown women's hockey team, 3-3, but No. 9/9 Robert Morris tacked on two scores later in the period to claim a 5-3 victory at RMU Island Sports Center on Saturday afternoon. The contest closed out non-conference play for the Bears who moved to 3-12-0 while RMU improved to 14-1-5, unbeaten in 13-straight.
Trailing 3-2 following the second period, Najjar put the Bears back in the game with a score 18 seconds into the third following a rebound. Junior Sam Donovan (New Brighton, Minn.) and sophomore Leah Olson (East Harwich, Mass.) tallied the assists. Brown later had a 5-on-3 advantage with back-to-back penalties called on the Colonials with 14:06 remaining, but the RMU defense prevented Brown from taking a lead, keeping the game tied 3-3. The Colonials regained a lead (4-3) at 8:42 when Brittany Howard put in a scramble in front of the net. Robert Morris later added a power-play tally by Amanda Pantaleo to bring the game to its eventual final of 5-3.
Jaycee Gebhard opened the game's scoring at 5:08 of the first period to put the Colonials on top, 1-0. Later in the opening stanza, freshman Sarah Migliori (East Greenwich, R.I.) tied it up when freshman Maybelline Beiring (Calumet, Mich.) and Donovan teamed up to feed the puck in front where Migliori finished for her second score of the season. Beiring's helper was her first-career point.
The Colonials held the shot lead in the first at 14-5. Brown's penalty kill was a perfect 3-for-3 while RMU fought off its lone infraction.
Goals from the right faceoff circle (Maggie Lague - 4:32) and a deflection off a slap shot (Natalie Marcuzzi - 4:57) gave the Colonials a 3-1 lead in the second period. The Bears pulled within one (3-2) at 8:16 when Olson scored a power-play goal when she deked a defender in the slot to get free and put in her third score of the year. Freshman Sena Hanson (New Brighton, Minn.) recorded the assist on the play.
Junior Julianne Landry (Hanover, Mass.) registered 18 saves in the frame to keep the Bears down just one going into the third. Shots were 20-11 in favor of the Colonials in the second. Brown was 1-for-2 on the power play and 1-for-1 on the kill.
Brown finished 1-for-5 on the power play while Robert Morris was 1-for-6. The Colonials held a 53-20 shot advantage overall. Landry closed out the game with a career-high 48 saves while Jessica Dodds saved 17 shots. Freshman Hana DeClerck (Menlo Park, Calif.) appeared in her first collegiate game for the Bears.
The Bears will remain on the road and next play at Rensselaer on Friday, Jan. 6 and at Union on Sat. Jan. 7. Friday's game will start at 6:00 p.m. and Saturday's contest will begin at 3:00 p.m. In the first meeting of the season, Brown defeated Union, 3-1 (Nov. 4) and fell to RPI, 4-1 (Nov. 5).
