
Gaziano's First Double-Double Pushes Women's Hoops Past Morgan State, 68-51

BALTIMORE, Md. – Freshman guard Justine Gaziano recorded her first career double-double on 19 points and a season-high 12 rebounds to lead Brown University women's basketball to a 68-51 win at Morgan State University at Hill Field House on Saturday afternoon.
The Bears (8-4) used a 19-2 run spanning the second and third quarters and an 11-1 burst late in the third quarter to pull away from the host Lady Bears (2-11).
Gaziano (Natick, Mass.) posted 13 points and seven rebounds in the second half on her way to her fifth contest in double figures in six games played this year.
Sophomore guard Shayna Mehta (San Francisco, Calif.) totaled 13 points on 6-of-12 shooting to go with three assists and three rebounds for her 11th game in double figures in 12 outings this season.
Freshman forward Kathleen Ryan (Clarence Center, N.Y.) scored a career-high 13 points, connecting on 2-of-3 shots from 3-point distance and 5-of-6 free throws.
Brown held Morgan State to 25.7-percent shooting (18-of-70) from the field in the game and improved to 5-0 all-time against the Lady Bears.
Brown claimed a 14-10 lead at the end of the first quarter that included a 25-foot 3-pointer from Ryan before moving ahead 18-10 at the 9:23 mark of the second quarter behind an 11-2 run. Morgan State answered with a 10-1 streak to pull ahead 20-19 with 4:28 left in the half.
The Bears responded with the final 10 points of the first half to take a 29-20 edge into the locker room. Ryan helped initiate the run with a 3-pointer from the top of the key, and Gaziano scored the final four points of the half with a pair of layups in the last 1:03.
A Gaziano 3-point play 2:10 into the third quarter capped 15 straight points for the Bears, and a fast break layup from Mehta put the Bears up 38-22 at the 7:07 mark of the third, concluding a 19-2 run. Five different Bears scored during an 11-1 stretch that gave the visitors a 49-27 lead with 1:16 remaining in the stanza. Brown brought a 51-30 advantage into the fourth quarter.
Gaziano scored the Bears' first four points of the fourth frame to extend their lead to 23 points – their largest margin of the game – at 55-32 with 8:23 remaining. Brown maintained a double-digit advantage the rest of the way. Freshman center Haley Green (Salem, Va.) scored her first collegiate points inside of the final minute.
For Morgan State, Zuri White posted a double-double on 12 points and 13 rebounds, and Braennan Farrar added 12 points on 10-of-11 free throws.
Next, Brown hosts Rhode Island College for its Education Day game on Monday, Jan. 9 at noon with local elementary school students hearing from presenters in their respective fields prior to the game.
