PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's hockey team was defeated by UConn, 3-1, in a non-conference game on Tuesday night at Meehan Auditorium. Junior Cynthia Kyin (Stokie, Ill.) recorded the Bears' goal in the third period to knot the contest, 1-1, but the Huskies added a power-play goal and an empty net tally to seal the win.
The first period ended scoreless as junior Julianne Landry (Hanover, Mass.) made 11 saves to keep the Huskies off the board and Morgan Fisher made seven saves on the other side. Towards the end of the stanza, junior Sam Donovan (New Brighton, Minn.) and freshman Alley Rempe (Calgary, Alberta) had scoring opportunities in the slot but Fisher came up with the stops. Brown fought off the lone penalty in the period.
UConn (7-4-1) registered the game's first goal when Leona Sims put the Huskies on top at 9:01 of the second when she collected a loose puck in front. Both Lindsay Roethke and Cydnee Cook had shots before Sims put in the rebound. The visitors edged Brown in shots for the second period, 14-13. Just like the first period, the Bears killed off their lone penalty while UConn also fought off one infraction. Landry upped her first period save total by two, recording 13 saves in the stanza. Fisher also made 13 stops for UConn.
The Bears (3-4-0) quickly tied it up in the third period (1:44) when Kyin took a shot from the left faceoff circle that slipped by Fisher for her first goal of the season. Freshman Lucinda Quigley (Newton, Mass.) was credited with the assist when she passed the puck up to Kyin.
With UConn on the power play 13:11 into the third, Landry made back-to-back saves but Leah Lum was able to score a power-play goal at 13:57 to give the Huskies a 2-1 advantage.
Landry was pulled with 1:28 remaining in the game in favor of an extra skater but Theresa Knutson recorded and empty net goal to seal the game, 3-1, for UConn.
Overall, Landry made a season-high 36 saves while Fisher tallied 28 stops. UConn outshot Brown 39-29 in the contest. The Huskies went 1-for-3 on the power-play while the Bears were 0-for-1.
