PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Three different Bears scored as the Brown women's hockey team defeated Union, 3-1, in an ECAC match-up on Friday night at Meehan Auditorium. Freshman Alley Rempe (Calgary, Alberta) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the second period.
The Bears (3-2-0, 1-2-0 ECAC) registered their first score at 14:50 of the first period while on the break. Sophomore Leah Olson (East Harwich, Mass.) started the play, passing the puck up to junior Sam Donovan (New Brighton, Minn.) who carried it to the blue line and then dished it to senior Maddie Woo (Plymouth, Minn.) who was crashing to the slot and beat the Union goalie blocker side. Brown closed the period with a 5-on-3 with 30 second remaining, but were unable to get a shot off before the horn.
Brown edged Union in shots for the opening period, 9-8. The Bears fought off their lone penalty while the Dutchwomen killed off all three of their infractions.
After the teams traded penalties in the second, senior Monica Elvin (Oakland, Calif.) made multiple saves to keep the Bears' 1-0 lead. At 16:27 Brown registered its second goal when Rempe recorded her third goal of the season. Sophomore Bridget Carey (Weymouth, Mass.) tallied the assists when she found Rempe high slot.
The Bears didn't waste much time to notch their third goal of the contest. Sophomore Olson connected on a slap shot off of a rebound from Carey for her first goal of the season. Brown increased its shot lead in the period to 10-6. Both teams fought off all their penalties, with Brown going 0-for-4 on the power play and Union going 0-for-3.
Union's (2-9-0, 0-3-0 ECAC) offense opened the third by peppering the Brown goal with shots. Elvin held strong in the crease, totaling an impressive 19 saves in the frame and allowing just one goal, a power-play tally by Haley Shugart at 15:14, to seal the win for the Bears.
Elvin finished the game with a season-high 33 saves while on the other side, Amelia Murray, recorded 19 stops.
In all, Union went 1-for-8 on the power play while Brown went 0-for-7. The Dutchwomen outshot the Bears 34-22, with help from a 20-shot third period.
The Bears return to action tomorrow (Nov. 5) hosting Rensselaer (3-7-1, 1-2-0 ECAC) at Meehan Auditorium for a 3:00 p.m. contest.
