
Women's Hockey Closes Out First Half of Season with Non-Conference Game Against Merrimack on Tuesday

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's hockey team will host Merrimack in a non-conference game on Tuesday, Nov. 29 at Meehan Auditorium, starting at 7:00 p.m. The contest will be Brown's final game before its winter break, with the team resuming action on Friday, December 30 at Robert Morris.

SCOUTING THE WARRIORS
Merrimack enters Tuesday's game with a 5-10-2 overall record and a 2-7-0 mark in Hockey East play. The Warriors went 1-0-1 this past weekend, starting with a 1-1 overtime tie at No. 8/9 Quinnipiac on Friday, Nov. 25, followed by a 4-3 win vs. Yale on Saturday, Nov. 26 to win the Nutmeg Classic Championship. Katelyn Rae leads the Warriors in points, with 13 on a team-best 11 goals and two assists. Mikyla Grant-Mentis has the team-high in assists with 10 on the year. Grant-Mentis (2-10-12), Paige Voight (8-4-12) and Jessica Bonde (8-4-12) rank second on the squad in scoring. Léa-Kristine Demers has appeared in 12 games in goal, with 12 starts, a 5-7-0 record, a 3.28 goals against average and a .903 save percentage. Merrimack has picked up three of its five wins on the road this season.
BROWN TALKING POINTS
The Bears are led in scoring by freshman Alley Rempe who has three goals and a team-high five assists for eight points. The newcomer was named ECAC Rookie of the Week in the team's first weekend of play (Oct. 26). Junior assistant captain Sam Donovan leads the team in goals with five, and has two assist for seven points, good for second on the team in overall points. Donovan registered her second-career hat trick against Sacred Heart on Oct. 22 in a 7-0 win. Senior Monica Elvin leads the team in games started in net (8), and has recorded five 30+ saves games on the season. When scoring first in a contest, the Bears are a perfect 3-0-0 this year. Brown is also 2-0-0 when out shooting its opponent.
LAST SEASON VS. MERRIMACK
The Warriors won last season's meeting, 4-1, at Lawler Rink on Jan. 19. Merrimack scored the first two goals of the game before Brown got on the board with a goal from Hunter Davis '16. The Warriors tacked on two power-play goals to seal the victory. Julianne Landry recorded 28 saves in net for the Bears.
THE SERIES VS. MERRIMACK
The Warriors are in their second year as a Division I program. Last season's meeting, a 4-1 Merrimack win, is the only meeting between the two teams. The Warriors went 5-26-3 (3-18-3 Hockey East) in their inaugural season.
LAST TIME OUT
Brown was defeated by Providence, 7-3, in the 22nd Mayor's Cup on Saturday, Nov. 26 at Meehan Auditorium. With the win, the Friars have captured three-straight Mayor's Cup games.
UNDERCLASSMAN LEADING SCORING FOR SECOND-STRAIGHT YEAR
The freshman and sophomore class lead the Bears in scoring for 2016-17, and for the second-straight year. Together the two classes have 14 goals, 23 assists and 37 points, which makes up 64% of the team's goals, 72% of the squad's assists and 69% of the Bears' points. The sophomores lead all classes in goals (9), assists (12) and points (21).
In 2015-16, Brown's freshmen and sophomores made up 62% of the team's scoring (61 points), which included 64% of the Bears' goals (24) and a little over half (54%) of the team's assists (37). The freshman group (now sophomores) led all of the classes in assists (26) and points (38), while the sophomores (now juniors) and freshmen shared the lead in goals (12).
TWO-SPORT ATHLETE
Freshman forward Veronica Alois is also a member of Brown's women's soccer team. The Andover, Mass. native appeared in 13 of the soccer team's 16 games and tallied an assist on the season.
Alois appeared in her first game on Saturday, Nov. 26 against Providence in the 22nd Mayor's Cup and scored her first collegiate goal in the contest.
BEARS GO 6-FOR-6 ON THE PENALTY KILL AGAINST PROVIDENCE
Brown was a perfect 6-for-6 on the penalty kill against Providence on Saturday, Nov. 26 in the 22nd Mayor's Cup. The Bears fought off three infractions in the first, two in the second and one in the third. Brown also went 7-for-7 on the penalty kill against Sacred Heart. In that game, the Bears fought off two penalties in the first, three in the second and two in the third.

The Bears resume action on Friday, Dec. 30 and Saturday, Dec. 31 at Robert Morris. Friday's game at the RMU Island Sports Center will begin at 7:00 p.m., while the series finale on Saturday will start at 2:00 p.m.
