PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Former Brown men's hockey standout Nick Lappin '16 made his National Hockey league (NHL) debut for the New Jersey Devils on Friday in the team's overtime loss to the Chicago Blackhawks. He returned to the lineup in Saturday's win over Tampa Bay, adding an assist for his first career point.
After making his NHL debut against his childhood team in the Blackhawks, Lappin assisted on Devante Smith-Pelly's goal against the Lightning, as he sent a backhanded pass to the front of the net to set up the second-period tally.
Lappin signed a two-year entry-level contract with New Jersey at the end of his senior year at Brown and finished last season with Albany (AHL), playing as an ATO. He had 14 points (8g-6a) in 23 regular season and postseason contests. Lappin posted one goal and two assists through six games with Albany this season, where the team went 5-1 and was the last unbeaten team in the AHL.
Lappin put together a standout senior season for the Bears, as he led the team in goals (17) and points (33), and finished third in assists (16) in 31 games played. He also added four power-pay goals. The top line winger earned First Team All-Ivy honors and recorded both his 100th career point and 50th career goal during the season. The forward finished his career with 51 goals and 55 assists for 106 career points in 123 games. He served as an assistant captain as a junior and senior.
Lappin is the sixth Brown alum to appear in an NHL game over the last two seasons, along with Yann Danis '04, Ryan Garbutt '09, Harry Zolnierczyk '11, Bobby Farnham '12 and Garnet Hathaway '14.
