
Women's Hockey Defeated by No. 4/4 St. Lawrence, 5-0

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Brown women's ice hockey team was defeated by No. 4/4 St. Lawrence, 5-0, on Saturday afternoon in ECAC play at Meehan Auditorium. With the win, the Saints remain undefeated at 13-0-1 (8-0-0 ECAC) while the Bears move to 3-8-0 (1-7-0) on the year.
St. Lawrence took a 1-0 lead 6:31 into the first as Justine Reyes recorded a score in front. Senior netminder Monica Elvin (Oakland, Calif.) closed the period with 10 saves while Brooke Wolejko turned away seven shots. The Bears fought off the lone infraction in the stanza. SLU finished with a 11-7 advantage in shots for the first.
The second period remained scoreless for both sides until 16:15 when Kayla Nielsen tallied a goal for the Saints to increase their lead to two. St. Lawrence added its second goal of the period when Kirsten Padalis recorded a goal just six seconds into the Saints' power play (19:11). SLU held a 14-7 lead in shots for the frame and went 1-for-2 in man-up opportunities while Brown was 0-for-1. Elvin increased her opening period save total with 12 in the second. Brooke Wolejko made seven saves while Sonija Shelly came in to finish the period and did not register a save.
Brown opened the third period on the power-play but was called for its own infraction 25 seconds to produce 4-vs.-4 on the ice. Padalis next recorded her second goal of the day at 1:36 to lift SLU to a 4-0 lead. The Saints recorded their second power-play goal of the game at 13:07 from Amanda McClure to grow their lead to five.
Shelly closed out the game in net for the Saints, making six saves while Elvin concluded the contest with 31 stops, her fifth game of the season with 30 or more saves.
Junior Sam Donovan (New Brighton, Minn.) and freshman Sena Hanson (New Brighton, Minn.) paced the Bears' offense with five and four shots, respectively.
St. Lawrence ended the game 2-for-5 on the power play while Brown was 0-for-2. The Saints also held a 36-20 advantage in shots.
The Bears will next host Providence in the 22nd Mayor's Cup on Saturday, Nov. 26 at Meehan Auditorium. Puck drop for the non-conference game is set for 3:00 p.m.
