PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Brown women's hockey team was defeated by Providence, 7-3, in the 22nd Mayor's Cup on Saturday at Meehan Auditorium. With the win, the Friars have captured the last three Mayor's Cup games, while Brown still holds the overall edge in the series, 10-9-3.
Providence (8-8-1) got off to a quick start with two-straight goals from Blair Parent (1:03, 2:55) in the first period. The Friars later tallied two more goals 34 seconds apart, the first from Meaghan Rickard (10:03), and the second from Whitney Dove (10:37) to take a 4-0 lead. The Bears fought off all three of their penalties in the stanza while PC did not commit an infraction. Providence recorded 20 shots to Brown's four in the frame. Freshman Calla Isaac (Sherwood Park, Alberta) and senior Monica Elvin (Oakland, Calif.) each had eight saves in the period.
Parent registered her third goal for a hat trick 37 seconds into the second period. It is the second time a player has recorded three goals in the Mayor's Cup, as Kristy Zamora (2001) is the only other student-athlete to do so in the 2001 meeting. Madison Sansone added a score later in the period at 16:37 to increase PC's lead to 6-0. Elvin closed out the period with 10 saves while the Friars' Madison Myers also made 10 stops. The Bears were able to generate more offensive pressure in the period, totaling 10 shots, with junior Sam Donovan (New Brighton, Minn.), sophomore Bridget Carey (Weymouth, Mass.) and freshman Sarah Migliori each recording two shots.
Brown (3-9-0) got on the board in the third period as freshman Veronica Alois (Andover, Mass.) registered her first collegiate goal at 11:52 in her first-career game. Migliori started the play when she got the puck in the neutral zone and fed it to sophomore Abby Niewchas (Cochrane, Alberta), who carried the puck towards the goal and slid it to Alois who was crashing to the net. The assist for Migliori was her first-career point.
The Bears followed Alois' score with two quick unassisted tallies from sophomore Leah Olson (East Harwich, Mass.) (13:52) and Migliori (14:14) to pull within three (6-3). Migliori's score was her first collegiate goal.
Brown was not able to add another goal as PC capped off its win with an empty-net shorthanded goal by Cassidy Carels with two seconds left in the game. Providence held a 11-9 advantage in shots for the final period.
Elvin finished the third with 10 saves and concluded the contest with 28 while Myers had six saves in the third and 20 overall.
Brown's penalty kill was a perfect 6-for-6 on the day while PC also fought off all four of its infractions.
The Bears will next host Merrimack in a non-conference game on Tuesday, Nov. 29 at Meehan Auditorium, starting at 7:00 p.m. The contest will be Brown's final game before its winter break, when the team next resumes action on Friday, December 30 at Robert Morris.
