
Smith, Lucenti Lead Volleyball Past Dartmouth in Four Sets, 3-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Payton Smith landed a match-high 15 kills on .545 hitting, classmate Sarah Lucenti tallied a double-double on a match-best 26 assists and 16 digs, and Brown University volleyball beat Dartmouth College, 3-1 (25-11, 25-19, 21-25, 25-16) at the Pizzitola Sports Center on Saturday evening.
The Bears (4-11, 2-3 Ivy) hit .429 in the first set and .406 in the fourth frame in addition to compiling 13.0 total blocks in the win against the visiting Big Green (6-9, 0-5 Ivy).
Smith (Atherton, Calif.) finished the match with 21.0 points on her 15 kills and six blocks while Lucenti (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) posted her fourth double-double of the season.
Junior libero Melissa Cairo (Hillsborough, Calif.) notched 25 digs – her fourth straight match with 20 or more digs. Fellow junior Shirin Tooloee (San Jose, Calif.) registered 11 kills – her fifth double-figure kills outing in her last seven matches – to go with eight digs.
Sophomore Elisa Merten (Woodside, Calif.) contributed 13 assists and eight digs, junior Casey Tierney (San Jose, Calif.) added nine kills, four blocks, and four digs, and freshman Jacqueline Jacobs (Atlanta, Ga.) had six blocks.
Brown leapt out to a 7-1 lead to start set one and took its first double-digit edge at 18-8. In the 25-11 set victory, Smith recorded five kills on six attempts (.833 hitting), Lucenti chalked up eight assists and six digs, and Cairo had six digs.
With set two tied at 11-11, the Bears used a 5-1 spurt to pull ahead 16-12. Dartmouth remained within 22-18 late in the set before Brown took three of the last four points to win the frame, 25-19. Smith logged four kills and three blocks in the period with Lucenti adding eight assists and five digs and Cairo chalking up six digs.
Dartmouth kept the match alive with a 25-21 win in set three. Knotted at 18-18, the Big Green won three straight points to go up, 21-18. The Bears trimmed the margin to 22-21, but the visitors claimed the period's final three points. Cairo paced the Brown defense with seven digs in the stanza.
The Bears closed the contest with a 25-16 triumph in the fourth set. Taking a 6-1 early edge, Brown later used a 6-2 run to grab a 19-13 advantage. The hosts maintained at least a five-point lead the rest of the way. Tooloee and Smith landed five and four kills respectively in the frame with Cairo tacking on another six digs.
For Dartmouth, Danielle Glinka made 17 digs, Julia Lau posted 13 digs, Zoe Leonard chipped in 12 assists, and Kaira Lujan terminated on nine kills.
Next, Brown plays at Princeton on Friday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. and at Penn on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 6 p.m.
