
Volleyball Falls to Defending Ivy Champion Harvard in Four Sets, 3-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Casey Tierney recorded a season-high 11 kills, but Brown University volleyball dropped a 3-1 (10-25, 25-23, 25-15, 25-23) decision to Harvard University on Friday night at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
The Bears (3-11, 1-3 Ivy) claimed the first set, 25-10, before the Crimson (4-9, 2-2 Ivy) – the two-time defending Ivy League champions – took the next three frames to win the Ivy League match.
Tierney (San Jose, Calif.) paced the Brown offense for the first time this year while senior Payton Smith (Atherton, Calif.) contributed nine kills on .300 hitting.
Junior libero Melissa Cairo (Hillsborough, Calif.) tallied 23 digs for her fifth match this season with 20 or more digs. Senior Sarah Lucenti (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and sophomore Elisa Merten (Woodside, Calif.) posted 19 and 13 assists respectively while freshman Makena Ehlert (Orange County, Calif.) chipped in 10 digs.
Brown jumped ahead in the match with a 25-10 victory in the opening set. The Bears started the frame with a 13-5 edge and remained ahead 16-10 before scoring the stanza's final nine points. Tierney notched three kills and two blocks in the period.
The two sides jockeyed for position in set two with the frame consisting of seven ties and five lead changes as Harvard emerged with a 25-23 win to knot the match at one set apiece. Down the stretch, Brown went on a 5-1 run to pull ahead 22-21. The Crimson responded, earning four of the frame's last five points.
The visitors gained a 2-1 set advantage behind a 25-15 win in set three, hitting .438 in the period. The Bears trimmed their margin to 16-13 midway through the stanza before Harvard closed the set on a 9-2 streak. Cairo came up with nine digs in the frame.
Harvard picked up its second set win via a score of 25-23 in set four in a frame that witnessed 10 ties and five lead changes. Brown made a late charge in the period, capturing three straight points to tie the score at 23-23 prior to the Crimson winning the match's final two points. Cairo compiled seven digs in the set.
For Harvard, Corinne Bain registered a triple-double on 11 kills, 25 assists, and 14 digs, Grace Roberts Burbank landed a match-high 14 kills, and Isabelle Tashima added 17 digs.
Next, Brown hosts Dartmouth tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 8, at 5 p.m.
