PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Julian Gressel broke a scoreless game three minutes into overtime as the Brown men's soccer team fell to Providence College, 1-0, in Wednesday evening's non-conference matchup at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
Brown dropped to 5-4-1 with its first overtime loss of the season, while the Friars improved to 6-5 overall.
Senior keeper Erik Hanson (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) had three saves in net for the Bears. Colin Miller registered six saves on the other end in the win. Nico Lozada (Dallas, Texas) and Dean Bloembergen (Okemos, Mich.) paced the Bears with two shots apiece.
Brown controlled the game offensively in the opening half, logging nine shots with six on target, including a trio of bids in the final six minutes. Providence had four shots in the first stanza.
The Bears enjoyed a strong opportunity early in the second period after a foul just outside the box, but Lozada rang a shot of the crossbar and Will Cross (Nashville, Tenn.) followed with a rebound that sailed wide. Providence edged Brown in shots, 5-2, during the second period but neither side could capitalize as the teams prepared for overtime.
The Friars took advantage of a Brown foul early in overtime, setting up a free kick about 10 yards past midfield. Alex Vigliotti sent a ball into the box, where Gressel turned and fired a shot out eight yards out for the victory.
Brown outshot PC, 11-10, and won the battle for corner kicks, 7-4.
The Bears return to Ivy League action on Saturday when they visit Princeton at 7 PM.
