WORCESTER, Mass. - After trailing 1-0 entering the second half, the Brown field hockey team was powered by scores from senior Jaclyn Torres (Andover, Mass.) and freshman Gina Openshaw (Annapolis, Md.) to claim a 2-1 victory at Holy Cross in a non-conference game at Hart Turf Field on Sunday afternoon.
Holy Cross (8-6) scored first in the contest as the team capitalized on its second corner of the opening half, with Rachel Lapar beating the outstretched leg of sophomore goalie Katie Hammaker (Ephrata, Pa.) at 23:51 for the goal. Maureen Connolly was credited with the assist when she found Lapar cutting to the net.
The Bears (7-7) had back-to-back corners following the Crusaders' goal, but Marcia LaPlante was able to make two saves in net for Holy Cross.
The first half closed with shots even for both teams, 7-7, and Brown having a slight edge in penalty corners, 3-2.
To open the second stanza, Hammaker stopped a breakaway shot by Emily Loprete at 40:08 to keep the Bears within one. Brown was able to knot the game, 1-1, at 54:29 when senior Jaclyn Torres (Andover, Mass.) recorded her team-leading sixth goal of the year. Sophomore Rachel Lanoutte (Windham, N.H.) registered the helper when she passed it to Torres on the right side.
Three minutes later, Openshaw scored her fourth goal of the season to give the Bears a 2-1 lead (57:50) following a penalty corner. Senior Katarina Angus' (West Vancouver, British Columbia) strike found Openshaw who was right near the net to deflect the ball in for the score.
After the go-ahead goal, Brown moved the ball around to prevent Holy Cross from creating any scoring chances.
Brown concluded the game with a 20-11 advantage in shots, including a 13-4 differential in the second half. The Bears also had 10 penalty corners to the Crusaders' four.
Hammaker made a total of seven saves in the contest while Laplante made 12 stops in net for Holy Cross.
The Bears next play in back-to-back road games, first an Ivy League contest on Saturday, Oct. 29 at Penn., and second, a non-conference battle at Lehigh on Sunday, Oct. 30. Both matches will start at 12:00 p.m.
Video of all Brown field hockey home contests and all Ivy League games, home and away, will be broadcast live on ILDN.TV/BROWN.
