
Volleyball's Rally Comes Up Short in 3-1 Setback at Yale

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore Sabrina Stillwell recorded 11 kills as Brown University volleyball attempted to come back from a 2-0 set deficit before falling, 3-1 (25-15, 25-14, 19-25, 25-20), at Yale University on Friday night at the John J. Lee Amphitheater.
Inside Payne Whitney Gymnasium, the Bears (4-14, 2-6 Ivy) rallied for a win in the third set and nearly took the fourth frame before the host Bulldogs (13-4, 6-2 Ivy) – Ivy League champions in each year from 2010-14 and NCAA Championship participants in each year from 2011-14 – pulled out the win.
Stillwell (Laguna Beach, Calif.) added five digs while senior Payton Smith (Atherton, Calif.) posted nine kills and five blocks.
Senior setter Sarah Lucenti (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) totaled 19 assists and seven digs, and sophomore Elisa Merten (Woodside, Calif.) tallied 12 assists, seven kills, and seven digs. Freshman Makena Ehlert (Orange County, Calif.) finished with 11 digs, four kills, and four blocks, and junior libero Melissa Cairo (Hillsborough, Calif.) contributed 10 digs.
Brown remained within 10-7 of Yale early in set one before the Bulldogs used a 7-2 run to pull ahead 17-9. The hosts built a 23-11 lead behind a 6-0 spurt and closed the set with a 25-15 win despite four straight points from the visitors. Lucenti posted five assists and two digs in the frame.
In set two, Yale gained a 15-5 lead midway through the frame with seven consecutive points. Brown trimmed its deficit to 18-12 before the Bulldogs responded with a 6-0 run en route to a 25-14 set win. Stillwell landed four kills in the period.
The Bears responded with a 25-19 win in set three. Brown claimed an 11-8 lead early in the set on the strength of an 8-1 run. With three straight points, the visitors pulled ahead 17-12 and maintained at least a four-point edge the rest of the way. Smith terminated on five kills in the frame with Lucenti adding six assists.
Brown grabbed an early 11-8 edge in the fourth set on a 4-0 run before Yale pulled ahead 14-13 behind a 5-1 spurt. With the scored knotted at 17-17, the Bulldogs won five points in a row before closing the match with a 25-20 win. In the final frame, Stillwell posted three kills and Ehlert made five digs.
For Yale, Kelley Wirth posted a match-high 15 kills, Kelsey Crawford tallied a double-double on 36 assists and 12 digs, and Kate Swanson came up with a match-best 21 digs.
Next, Brown hosts Columbia on Friday, Oct. 28 at 7:00 p.m. and Cornell on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 5:00 p.m.
