
Merten Posts Double-Double, Volleyball Falls to Columbia, 3-0

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore Elisa Merten posted a double-double on 15 assists and 10 digs, but Brown University volleyball fell to Columbia University, 3-0 (25-18, 26-24, 25-19), on Friday night at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
The Bears (4-15, 2-7 Ivy) gained set point in set two before the visiting Lions (11-8, 6-3 Ivy) rallied to win the frame and take the match in three sets.
Merten (Woodside, Calif.) tallied her first double-double of the season and added four kills. Senior setter Sarah Lucenti (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) narrowly missed a double-double with 14 assists and nine digs.
Filling in at the libero spot, senior Emma Thygesen (Menlo Park, Calif.) tallied a team-best 11 digs. Sophomore Makena Ehlert (Orange County, Calif.) led Brown with eight kills to go with seven digs while freshman Jacqueline Jacobs (Atlanta, Ga.) notched a team-high five blocks with four kills.
Brown held a 13-11 lead on Columbia in set one before the Lions used a 6-0 run to pull ahead 17-13. The Bears remained within 20-17, but the visitors won five of the frame's last six points to claim the opening period, 25-18. Ehlert landed three kills in the frame while Merten had five digs.
The Bears held a 16-11 edge midway through set two and kept an advantage at 20-16. The Lions tied the set at 20-20 prior to Brown re-gaining a 24-22 lead. Facing set point, Columbia captured four straight points to pull out the set, 26-24.
In the second set, Lucenti registered seven assists and six digs, Merten totaled six assists, three kills, and three digs, and Ehlert terminated on four kills.
In set three, Brown remained within 14-13 midway through the frame and within 20-18 late in the stanza, but Columbia concluded the match on a 5-1 run, grabbing the final period, 25-19. Jacobs compiled four blocks and two kills in the set.
For Columbia, libero Cassie Wes contributed a match-high 33 digs, Grace Campbell dished out a match-best 34 assists, and Chichi Ikwuazom recorded a match-high 11 kills on .409 hitting with seven blocks. The Lions took the season series after defeating Brown, 3-0, on Oct. 1 in New York, N.Y.
Next, Brown hosts Cornell tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 29, at 5:00 p.m.
