
Volleyball Finishes New York Swing with 3-0 Setback at Columbia

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Junior Shirin Tooloee registered a team-high 10 kills, but Brown University volleyball fell at Columbia University, 3-0 (25-23, 25-17, 25-22), at Levien Gymnasium on Saturday evening.
In the second half of their trip in the state of New York, the Bears (3-10, 1-2 Ivy) challenged the Lions (8-5, 3-0 Ivy), who extended their winning streak to six matches. Brown beat Cornell, 3-2, in the first leg of its swing through the Empire State.
Tooloee (San Jose, Calif.) added four digs to her stat line while senior Payton Smith (Atherton, Calif.) tallied eight kills on .368 hitting alongside three blocks and three digs. Freshman Jacqueline Jacobs (Atlanta, Ga.) totaled a match-high five blocks with four kills.
Junior libero Melissa Cairo (Hillsborough, Calif.) contributed 26 digs, tying for the match high and notching 20 or digs in a match for the fourth time this season. She finished the weekend with 50 digs over the two matches. Sophomore Elisa Merten (Woodside, Calif.) and senior Sarah Lucenti (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) posted 16 and 15 assists apiece.
Columbia opened set one with a 15-5 lead and remained 10 points ahead at 19-9. Brown retaliated with a 13-4 run to close its deficit to 23-22 before the Lions emerged with a 25-23 win in the opening frame.
In the second stanza, the Lions held a 10-8 edge prior to using a 7-2 spurt to pull ahead 17-10. Columbia maintained a four-point advantage the rest of the period to win the frame, 25-17.
Neither side held a lead larger than two points in set two until Columbia took the final frame via a 25-22 margin. The two teams combined for 14 ties in the set before the hosts claimed three of the stanza's last four points.
For Columbia, Anja Malesevic terminated on a match-high 12 kills, Grace Campbell dished out 32 assists, and Cassie Wes came up with 26 digs.
Next, Brown returns to the Pizzitola Sports Center to host Harvard (Oct. 7, 7 p.m.) and Dartmouth (Oct. 8, 5 p.m.).
