NEWARK, N.J. – Junior Rebecca Musgrove totaled 15 points and a season-high 10 rebounds, and senior Jordin Alexander added 13 points as Brown University women's basketball topped NJIT, 74-49, at the Fleisher Athletic Center on Monday afternoon.
The Bears (11-2) opened the game with a 16-3 lead, outscored the hosts 17-4 in the second quarter, and netted the third quarter's first nine points to pull away from the Highlanders (3-11).
Musgrove (Plainview, N.Y.) tallied her first double-double of the season and her second in as many years against the Highlanders. She chipped in six assists and three steals after charting 10 points and 10 boards vs. NJIT last year.
Alexander (Fishers, Ind.) scored in double figures for the 11th time this season while freshman Erika Steeves (Montreal, Quebec) finished with 12 points and four rebounds, making 7-of-8 free throws.
Sophomore Janie White (Clarksville, Tenn.) added nine points on a trio of 3-pointers to go with five rebounds, and classmate Megan Reilly (Norwood, N.J.) compiled eight points, four rebounds, and two steals.
Brown held NJIT to 5-of-28 shooting (17.9 percent) in the first half, allowing the hosts to connect on just 3-of-14 shots in the first quarter and 2-of-14 shots in the second. The Highlanders ended the game shooting 27.3 percent (15-of-55).
The Bears' 11 non-conference wins tie for the second-most non-league wins in a single season in school history.
White and Musgrove opened the game with back-to-back 3-pointers after an NJIT basket, and Musgrove connected on another triple to give the Bears an 11-3 lead. White followed with one more trey as the visitors led 14-3 midway through the first quarter. A jumper along the lane from Alexander capped a 16-1 run for the Bears, and Brown held a 21-8 edge after the first.
Reilly hit a 3-pointer to open the second stanza prior to a basket for NJIT. A driving lay-in from freshman Mary Butler (Bangor, Maine) initiated a 14-2 run for the Bears to close the half. Alexander paced the Bears with seven points during the streak, and freshman Shayna Mehta (San Francisco, Calif.) added a jumper as Brown took a 38-12 advantage into the locker room.
A steal and score from Musgrove before a 3-pointer from the top of the key from White pushed Brown's lead to 35 points, 47-12, at the 8:04 mark of the third quarter. An old-fashioned 3-point play from Mehta and an Alexander jumper kept the visitors' edge at 54-19. The Bears brought a 57-25 lead into the final frame.
NJIT used a 10-0 run to pull within 57-32 early in the fourth quarter, but layups from Taylor Will (Arlington Heights, Ill.) and Steeves and a 3-pointer from Musgrove stemmed the run. The Highlanders cut the deficit to 71-49 on an 11-0 run before a 3-point play from Reilly.
For NJIT, Leah Horton posted team highs with 14 points and seven rebounds.
Next, Brown returns home to the Pizzitola Sports Center to take on Rhode Island College on Wed., Jan. 6 at 12:30 p.m. in its non-league finale. As part of the team's Education Day, the Bears expect to host approximately 1,500 local elementary and middle school students at the game.
