Alexander Scores 19, Women's Basketball Drops 66-49 Decision at Penn

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Senior Jordin Alexander scored a game-high 19 points as Brown University women's basketball dropped a 66-49 decision at the University of Pennsylvania on Saturday night at the Palestra.
"I'm much more pleased with tonight's effort than last night," Brown head coach Sarah Behn said. "I thought that the kids competed tonight, especially in the second half when we played really tough man to man."
The Quakers (14-3, 3-0 Ivy) – the No. 2 pick in the Ivy League preseason poll – used a 19-2 run from late in the first quarter to early in the second stanza to help gain a 34-14 lead on the visiting Bears (12-6, 0-4 Ivy) at the half.
"I'm really happy with the rebounding," Behn said. "I think that some of the things that we're working on, at least on the defensive side, showed tonight. We're a young team, and we're working on composure and trying to fix a few things on both ends. It just takes a little time."
Alexander (Fishers, Ind.) finished in double figures for the 16th time in 18 games this season and added a team-high eight rebounds, three assists, and three steals. During one stretch over the second and third quarters, she tallied 13 of the team's 14 points and closed the night 7-of-13 from the field.
Sophomore forward Janie White (Clarksville, Tenn.) chipped in seven points, five rebounds, three blocks and three assists while freshman forward Erika Steeves (Montreal, Quebec) grabbed seven rebounds.
The Bears opened the game with a 7-5 lead after Musgrove scored off the opening tip, White hit a 3-pointer, and Steeves connected on a jumper. Mehta knocked down a 3-pointer in transition to keep Brown within 12-10 with 2:28 to go in the quarter before the Quakers scored the frame's last eight points to take a 20-10 lead.
Penn went ahead 25-10 early in the third quarter, capping a 13-0 run, prior to a mid-range jumper from Alexander. The Quakers gained a 31-12 edge with 6:30 to go in the half, finishing their 19-2 run. Alexander hit a jumper in transition prior to Penn brining a 34-14 advantage into halftime.
After the Quakers opened the second half with nine straight points, the Bears outscored the hosts 16-8 over the remainder of the third quarter. Alexander tallied nine straight points to bring Brown within 48-24 at the 3:10 mark of the frame. A 3-pointer from freshman Taylor Will (Arlington Heights, Ill.) cut it to 48-27, and a triple from sophomore Megan Reilly (Norwood, N.J.) made it 49-30 just prior to the end of the quarter.
In the fourth quarter, White connected on her second 3-pointer of the game as Brown outscored Penn, 19-15, in the period.
For Penn, Sydney Stipanovich tied for the game high with 19 points and corralled a game-best 14 rebounds. Michelle Nwokedi (12 points) and Anna Ross (10 points, five assists) also finished in double figures.
Next, Brown concludes its four-game Ivy road swing with contests at Cornell on Friday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. and at Columbia on Saturday, Feb. 6 at 6 p.m.
