Wrestling Takes Lead at No. 16 Cornell before Dropping 30-13 Decision

ITHACA, N.Y. – Brown University wrestling led 13-10 after back-to-back wins from junior Justin Staudenmayer and freshman Jon Viruet before No. 16 Cornell University pulled away in a 30-13 win at the Friedman Wrestling Center on Saturday afternoon.
In their Ivy League opener and second EIWA dual of the season, the Bears (0-4, 0-2 EIWA) took their 13-10 advantage through six bouts before the host Big Red (3-3, 3-0 EIWA) captured the final four bots of the meet.
Staudenmayer (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) picked up an 8-0 major decision win over Cornell's Kyle Simaz at 157 lbs. to tie the match at 10-10 in the team score. Staudenmayer opened with a takedown and two near fall points to take a 4-0 lead after the first period. He added an escape and a takedown in the third period to go with a point for riding time.
In the next bout at 165 lbs., Viruet (Springfield, Mass.) followed with an 11-7 win via decision over the Big Red's Christopher Dowdy to push the Bears ahead, 13-10. The two stood tied at 3-3 after the first period before Viruet took a 7-5 edge through two frames and won the third 4-2.
At 133 lbs., sophomore Zeke Salvo (Baltimore, Md.) won his bout via forfeit while at 149 lbs., junior Steven Galiardo (Chicago, Ill.) dropped a narrow 4-3 decision.
For the season, Staudenmayer improved to 16-6 and 3-1 in dual meets, Viruet moved to 10-7 on the season and 2-2 in duals, and Salvo bettered his season mark to 12-10 and 2-2 in duals.
Next, Brown continues EIWA dual meet competition tomorrow at Columbia at 1 p.m., and at Sacred Heart at 6 p.m.
