
Wrestling Tops Sacred Heart, Falls at Columbia on Tiebreaker

NEW YORK, N.Y. and FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Brown University wrestling earned a 22-17 win at Sacred Heart University after falling at Columbia University on a tiebreaker, 16-15, in a pair of EIWA dual meets at the Pitt Center and Blue Gym respectively on Sunday.
The Bears (1-5, 1-3 EIWA) held on for the win against the host Pioneers (1-4, 0-2 EIWA) in their second dual of the day after tying the Lions (5-1, 3-0 EIWA) who took that dual with a 47-46 advantage in total match points.
Leading the Bears, junior Justin Staudenmayer (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) and sophomore Zeke Salvo (Baltimore, Md.) each won two bouts. Salvo tallied his team-leading sixth fall of the year at SHU while Staudenmayer registered his team-high fourth technical fall vs. the Pioneers.
Next, Brown continues dual competition next weekend at Bucknell (Sat., Jan. 23, noon), at Franklin & Marshall (Sat., Jan. 23, 6:30 p.m.), and at Bloomsburg (Sun., Jan. 24, 1 p.m.).
Dual 1: Columbia 16, Brown 15, Criterion 3.15.3
NEW YORK, N.Y. – Brown tied Columbia 15-15 at the end of the 10-bout dual meet, but the host Lions took the contest, 16-15, winning the tiebreaker due to their higher number of total match points, 47-46, on Sunday afternoon at the Dodge Fitness Center Blue Gym.
In the Ivy and EIWA dual, the Bears and Lions each won five bouts, and all 10 bouts finished with a verdict of decision, leading to the tie team score at the end of the meet. The third tiebreaker came into play as both sides held five bout victories, and neither team notched a fall, forfeit, default, or disqualification.
Sophomore Michael Russo (Jersey City, N.J.) opened the dual with an 8-1 win via decision over Columbia's Vince Pallone at 125 lbs., and classmate Salvo followed at 133 lbs. with a 9-6 victory over Angelo Amenta to give the Bears a 6-0 lead in the team score.
After Columbia took the bout at 141 lbs., junior Steven Galiardo (Chicago, Ill.) responded with a 7-3 win at 149 lbs. over Danny Reed to keep Brown up 9-3. Staudenmayer pushed the visitors' edge to 12-3 with a 3-1 comeback win at 157 lbs. against Markus Scheidel.
The Lions claimed wins in the 165 and 174-pound bouts, including a win in a sudden victory period at 165, before sophomore Austin Pfarr (Marysville, Ohio) rallied for a 5-4 win at 184 lbs. vs. Mike Fetchet, extending Brown's advantage to 15-9 in the team score.
Columbia won the bouts at 197 and 285 lbs. and tied the dual for the first time at 15-15 after its win in the heavyweight division. The hosts took their first lead on the tiebreaker criteria.

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Brown captured wins in the 133, 157, 165, and 174-pound divisions and stymied a late Sacred Heart comeback with a win at heavyweight to conclude its day with a 22-17 win at the Pitt Center on Sunday night.
In the EIWA match-up, Salvo opened the scoring for the Bears with a fall in 2:32 at 133 lbs. before the Pioneers picked up back-to-back wins to gain a 10-6 edge through four bouts.
Staudenmayer began the turnaround for the visitors with a technical fall victory at 157 lbs. to push Brown ahead 11-10. Freshman Jon Viruet (Springfield, Mass.) mirrored Staudenmayer with a technical fall triumph at 165 lbs., and classmate CJ LaFragola (Little Egg Harbor, N.J.) pulled out a 4-2 win at 174 lbs., extending the Bears' lead to 19-10.
The Pioneers collected wins at 184 and 197 lbs., but senior Augustus Marker (Castle Rock, Colo.) notched the meet-deciding win with a 4-2 victory at 285 lbs. over SHU's Ray Sherwood.
