
Balanced Scoring Leads No. 12 Men's Water Polo Past Iona, 11-7

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Four different Bears netted a pair of goals as No. 12 Brown University men's water polo defeated Iona College, 11-7, on Saturday night at Hynes Pool in the start of its New York weekend.
The Bears (9-3, 3-0 CWPA North) held a 5-3 edge at halftime and outscored the host Gaels (2-6, 1-2 CWPA North) 6-4 in the second half to win the first of their three games in the Empire State on the weekend.
Freshman Travis Bouscaren (Cambridge, Mass.), sophomore Tyler Kirchberg (Orinda, Calif.), and juniors Luke Irwin (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) and Jake Wyatt (Corona Del Mar, Calif.) each scored two goals. Wyatt added an assist and an ejection drawn, Bouscaren drew two ejections, and Kirchberg had an assist.
Junior Warren Smith (Dallas, Texas) notched a goal and two assists while senior Will Klein (Pasadena, Calif.) drew a game-high three ejections. Sophomore Tommy Bush (Lafayette, Calif.) and freshman Spencer Carroll (Newport Beach, Calif.) each compiled a goal and an assist.
In goal, freshman net-minder Will Renken (South Pasadena, Calif.) made 10 saves.
Wyatt opened the scoring for Brown, tying the score at 1-1 in the first quarter off an assist from Smith. Irwin gave the visitors a 2-1 lead after one with the period's only other marker.
Bouscaren opened the second stanza with a pair of goals off helpers from Carroll and Smith as the Bears took a 4-1 lead. Iona pulled within 4-3 before Carroll scored at the buzzer to give Brown a 5-3 edge at halftime.
In the third quarter, Wyatt, Kirchberg, and Smith scored in order to push the Bears' advantage to 8-3. The Gaels trimmed their deficit to 8-5 with the frame's final two tallies.
Kirchberg initiated the fourth quarter's scoring, and Bush added a goal after a Gael marker to put Brown up 10-6. Iona scored once more before Irwin closed the game's scoring.
Next, Brown continues CWPA Northern Division play tomorrow at St. Francis Brooklyn (11 a.m.) and at Fordham (3:30 p.m.).
