PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown field hockey team lost in overtime to California, 2-1, in a non-conference match-up on Friday at Goldberger Field. Freshman Katie Hammaker (Ephrata, Pa.) turned away a game-high nine shots in the contest for the Bears. The game was Brown's third overtime action of the season and first overtime loss, as the Bears are now 2-1 in overtime games (3-2 win over Bryant, 2-1 win over Saint Joseph's).
"I thought Katarina Angus and Katie Hammaker had outstanding games," said head coach Jill Reeve. "I was proud of our team today for playing a solid 70-plus minute game against a tough team. I am very excited for our team to start Ivy League competition."
The first half opened with Hammaker turning away multiple shots from the Cal (6-3) offense before Brown (3-4) gained momentum with a goal from freshman Ellie Seid (Larchmont, N.Y.) to take a 1-0 lead at 24:02. The period ended with shots even for both teams at nine.
Cal tied up the game 1-1 with a goal from Marie Lanckneaus off of a penalty corner at 44:14 of the second half. Both teams remained deadlocked through the end of regulation. The Golden Bears outshot Brown in the second stanza, 12-3.
At 80:55 of the overtime, Hammaker made a crucial save on a Cal shot by Janaye Sakkas to keep the game alive for the Bears. Sakkas got her revenge, however, and gained possession at the top of the arc and fired a shot to her left for the game-winner at 81:24.
For the game, Cal held the lead in penalty corners with a 9-4 advantage. Cal goalkeeper Kori Griswold saved a total of five shots in the game.
The Bears travel to Columbia for their next game on Sunday, Sept. 27 at 12:00 p.m.
