NEW YORK – After a scoreless first half, Columbia used two goals in the second half to defeat the Brown field hockey team, 2-0, in the Bears' first Ivy League action of the season on Sunday afternoon.
Columbia (5-2, 1-0 Ivy League) scored the game's first goal at 44:35 with a tip-in from Whitney Hartstone off of a penalty corner. Soon after (45:12), the Lions increased their lead to 2-0 with a long shot from Anna Scipioni that slipped by freshman goalkeeper Katie Hammaker (Ephrata, Pa.).
The Bears (3-5, 0-1 Ivy League) had two chances towards the end of the second half with two penalty corners. Brown's best chance came at 66:41 when junior Katarina Angus (West Vancouver, British Columbia) took a shot off of a corner, but Columbia goalkeeper Kimberly Piannucci was able to make the stop.
For the contest, Hammaker made a total of seven saves while Piannucci registered four. Angus and senior Anna Masini (Ann Arbor, Mich.) each tallied a defensive save for Brown.
Columbia recorded eight shots in each half while Brown totaled three in the first and five in the second.
The Bears will next host conference opponent Dartmouth on Saturday, Oct. 3 and non-conference foe Georgetown on Sunday, Oct. 4. Both games are set to start at noon.
