PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Tariq Akeel (Rochester Hills, Mich.) evened the score late in the second half, but Florida Gulf Coast answered right back with the go-ahead goal and held on to beat the Brown men's soccer team, 2-1, Friday night at Stevenson Field.

Brown moves to 3-3 on the season, while FGCU improves to 2-2-1 overall.

Sawyer Jackman registered seven saves in net for the Eagles to pick up the victory. Junior Erik Hanson (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) had five stops on the other end for the Bears.

FGCU outshot the Bears by a 7-5 margin in the opening stanza, but after a scoreless first half, the Eagles opened up the scoring five minutes into the second period. Rodrigo Saravia was on the right side and sent a cross in front for Miguel Jaime, who skimmed a header past the reach of Hanson for the one-goal lead.

Brown started to put pressure on the FGCU defense with 25 minutes remaining in the contest, highlighted by a pair of headers from rookie Jack Hagstrom (Middleton, Wis.), but both shots were corralled by Jackman to maintain the lead.

Nevertheless, the Bears broke through in the 82nd minute, when Akeel was tackled in the box following a corner kick. He then buried the penalty kick to tie the game, 1-1.

FGCU responded at 85:08 when Dylan Sacramento fielded a pass from Kamar Marriot and hit the top right corner of the net to push the Eagles in front, 2-1.

Brown made a strong final attempt with six seconds left in the contest. Jack Gorab (Newport Beach, Calif.) sent a free kick into the box and the ball deflected off a pair of FGCU players and into the net, but the goal was called back for running into the keeper.

Brown and FGCU were even in shots with 12 apiece.
