PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University women's soccer fell to the No. 24 University of Connecticut, 1-0, as Rhode Island native Stephanie Ribeiro scored the lone goal in the 11th minute at Stevenson Field on Sunday afternoon.
The Bears (2-4-0) increased their offensive pressure in the second half, but the visiting nationally-ranked Huskies (8-1-0) held on for the win in their first visit to Stevenson Field since 1996.
"We were looking to get a result anyway that we could. The effort was unbelievable," 39th-year Brown head coach Phil Pincince said. "That was a great Brown effort against a very, very strong UConn team. For me, this was one of the best efforts against a UConn team that I have seen in a very long time."
Brown freshman goalkeeper Christine Etzel (Madison, Conn.) made three saves and the Bears' defense twice cleared UConn shots on goal off the line. The Huskies' Emily Armstrong turned aside three shots in her third shutout of the season.
The hosts nearly lifted the lid on the game's scoring in the 7th minute as a header from senior Erin Katz (Montgomery, Ala.) off a corner from classmate Jillian DeSimone (Lincoln, R.I.) was headed for the back of the net before a Husky defender knocked the shot away.
Ribeiro netted the game's only goal just over four minutes later as Liana Hinds played a square ball along the edge of the penalty area, and Ribeiro sent a shot from the top of the box into the lower right corner of the goal.
The Bears pressured the Huskies early in the second half as header from sophomore Maclaine Lehan (Shrewsbury, Mass.) required a block and a subsequent shot from Katz forced a save in the 52nd minute.
Sophomore Sarah Cobb (North Tustin, Calif.) kept the hosts within a goal as she cleared a Connecticut shot off the line in the 68th minute. Three minutes later a header from senior Charlotte Beach (New Haven, Conn.) carried wide of the right of the goal.
Brown's defensive unit again stymied UConn in the 75th minute as senior Sarah Moody (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) headed away an attempt off a corner and Etzel followed with a save on the ensuing corner kick.
The Bears registered a shot and a corner inside the final 10 minutes, but the visitors took valuable time off the clock late with corner flag runs.
Junior Carly Gould (Hampton Falls, N.H.) led Brown with four shots and Katz totaled three shots, two on goal. Connecticut's Samantha McGuire paced all players with six shots.
Next, Brown hosts Sacred Heart on Wednesday at 7 p.m. and Dartmouth on Sunday, Sept. 27 at 1 p.m. in its Ivy League opener.
