
Volleyball Splits with Robert Morris, Denver at Borderland Classic

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Brown University volleyball earned a 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 26-24) win over Robert Morris University before falling 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-16) to the University of Denver at the NMSU-UTEP Borderland Classic on Saturday at NMSU's Pan American Center.
The Bears (3-5) swept the Colonials (5-5) in their first match of the day before dropping a decision to the reigning Summit League champion Pioneers (8-3) in their final contest of the invitational.
Freshman Sabrina Stillwell (Laguna Beach, Calif.) paced Brown with 22 kills between the two matches, totaling 12 kills vs. Robert Morris and 10 kills vs. Denver.
Next, Brown will play three matches in the Central Connecticut State University Invitational against Holy Cross (Fri., Sept. 18, 7 p.m.), CCSU (Sat., Sept. 19, 1:30 p.m.), and Hartford (Sat., Sept. 19, 4 p.m.).
Match 1: Brown 3, Robert Morris 0 (25-16, 25-18, 26-24)
Stillwell notched a match-high 12 kills as Brown bested Robert Morris, 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 26-24), on Saturday afternoon. The Bears edged the Colonials in straight sets despite a late charge from RMU in the third frame, which required extra points.
Stillwell totaled double-digit kills for the sixth time in seven matches in her collegiate career while sophomore libero Melissa Cairo (Hillsborough, Calif.) registered a match-best 29 digs.
Juniors Payton Smith (Atherton, Calif.) and Emma Thygesen (Menlo Park, Calif.) each landed seven kills while freshman Courtney Palm (St. Louis, Mo.) compiled five kills and four blocks.
Senior Rachele Killian (Laguna Beach, Calif.) distributed 18 assists to go with three aces, and junior Sarah Lucenti (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) handed out 14 assists.
The Bears trailed 10-9 early in set one before rattling off an 8-1 run to take a 17-11 advantage. Brown went on to win the set's last four points in the 25-16 victory. Stillwell and Smith logged five kills apiece in the frame, and Cairo made 10 digs.
With set two tied 5-5, Brown used a 9-1 streak to stake itself to a 14-6 advantage. The Colonials pulled to within 19-14, but the Bears maintained their lead and won the stanza, 25-18. Stillwell posted four kills in the set, and Cairo tallied 12 digs.
The Bears held leads of 7-1 and 20-10 in set three before the Colonials countered. Robert Morris came all the way back to tie the score at 24-24 before Stillwell closed the set and the match with back-to-back kills.
Match 2: Denver 3, Brown 0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-16)
Smith and Stillwell each landed 10 kills, but Brown fell to Denver in its nightcap and final game at the Borderland Classic on Saturday night.
Smith recorded a .400 hitting percentage while Stillwell eclipsed double-figures in kills for the seventh time in Brown's eight matches. Sophomore Casey Tierney (San Jose, Calif.) followed with seven kills.
Senior Shannon Frost (Santa Ana, Calif.) posted a match-high 14 digs, and Cairo had 10 digs. Lucenti and Killian contributed 19 and 14 assists respectively,
Neither side held a lead larger than three points in the first set until the Pioneers scored five straight points to take a 22-18 edge and continued on for the 25-20 set win. Stillwell charted four kills in the set, and Cairo tallied eight digs.
In set two, Denver started with a 12-3 lead and held a 10-point advantage at 23-13. The Bears trimmed their deficit to 23-18 with a 5-0 run, but Denver captured another 25-20 set win. Smith paced the Bears with four kills in the frame.
The Pioneers held a slight 11-10 lead in set three prior to using a 6-0 streak to pull ahead at 17-10. Denver held at least a six-point edge the duration on its way to a 25-16 victory in the frame, Stillwell and Tierney each had four kills in the stanza.
