
Volleyball Wins First Match of CCSU Invitational, 3-0, Over Holy Cross

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – Brown University volleyball defeated Holy Cross in straight sets (26-24, 25-20, 25-22) on Friday night at the Central Connecticut State University Invitational in Detrick Gymnasium.
Freshman Sabrina Stillwell (Laguna Beach, Calif.) registered a team-best 11 kills on .500 hitting in the contest. Her 11 kills give her double-digit kills in eight of the team's nine matches. All four of Brown's wins this season have come via straight set victories (vs. Hartford, at Sacred Heart, vs. Robert Morris and vs. Holy Cross).
Junior Emma Thygesen (Menlo Park, Calif.) recorded double-digit kills with 10 in the match, and junior Payton Smith (Atherton, Calif.) logged a .900 hitting percentage – tied for the second-highest mark in a single match in school history – with nine kills on 10 swings.
Senior Rachele Killian (Laguna Beach, Calif.) paced the Bears with 19 assists while junior Sarah Lucenti (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) dished out 15 assists.
Senior Shannon Frost (Santa Ana, Calif.) tallied 14 digs to pace the defense, and sophomore Melissa Cairo (Hillsborough, Calif.) recorded 12 digs, giving her double-digit digs in eight of Brown's nine matches.
The Bears (4-5) took the first set going into extra points, 26-24. With the score tied at 11, Brown went on a 7-2 run to claim an 18-13 lead. Holy Cross (2-8) went on a run of its own and eventually climbed back to tie the score at 24. The Bears won the set with a kill from Stillwell and an attach error on Holy Cross. Brown held its highest hitting percentage of the match in the first set with a .324 mark.
After trailing early in the second set, Brown tied the Crusaders at 8-8 and never looked back, holding the lead the rest of the way, eventually winning the stanza, 25-20.
In the third set, trailing by one (14-13), Brown tallied four straight points to hold a 17-14 advantage and finished the set en route to its sweep, 25-22.
Brown continues action in the CCSU Invitational tomorrow (Sept. 19) against tournament host, Central Connecticut, at 1:30 p.m. and versus Hartford at 4:00 p.m.
