LEWISBURG, Pa. – No. 13 Brown University men's water polo beat No. 18 Johns Hopkins University, 15-7, prior to defeating the No. 15 United States Naval Academy, 13-9, inside Kinney Natatorium at the Bucknell Invitational on Saturday.
The Bears (5-2) used second-half surges to top both the Blue Jays (4-1) – in the morning – and the Midshipmen (4-1) – in the afternoon.
Junior Luke Irwin (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) paced the Bears with six goals between the two contests, scoring four markers against Navy.
Next, Brown plays two games at the Princeton Invitational tomorrow against Santa Clara (10 a.m.) and No. 5 Pacific (3:30 p.m.).
Game 1 – No. 13 Brown 15, No. 18 Johns Hopkins 7
Sophomore Tyler Kirchberg (Orinda, Calif.) scored three goals to lead No. 13 Brown past No. 18 Johns Hopkins, 15-7, on Saturday morning.
The Bears outscored the Blue Jays in the second half, 8-2, en route to the victory after holding a 7-5 lead at halftime.
Kirchberg added three ejections drawn and two assists while senior Matty Gallas (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) posted two goals and two assists. Junior Yahel Murvitz-Lahav (Tel Aviv, Israel) totaled two goals and four steals.
Sophomore Rico Burke (San Mateo, Calif.) contributed two goals, three steals, and two field blocks, and junior Jake Wyatt (Corona Del Mar, Calif.) tallied two goals and four assists. Irwin scored twice while sophomore Tommy Bush (Lafayette, Calif.) and freshman Spencer Carroll (Newport Beach, Calif.) each tacked on a single tally.
Freshman goalkeeper Will Renken (South Pasadena, Calif.) made six saves in the win.
The Blue Jays took a 3-1 lead to start the game despite a goal from Kirchberg. Burke netted a goal just before the end of the first quarter to pull Brown within 3-2 after one frame.
Brown took a 5-4 edge midway through the second stanza as Kirchberg, Bush, and Gallas all found the back of the net. JHU tied it at 5-5 before Wyatt tallied back-to-back goals to give the Bears a 7-5 halftime advantage.
After Hopkins scored the second half's opening goal, the Bears recorded the contest's next six goals to capture a 13-6 lead with 6:37 to play in the fourth quarter. Gallas, Murvitz-Lahav, Irwin, and Burke posted Brown's third-quarter goals.
In the fourth frame, Murvitz-Lahav and Carroll charted the Bears' first two goals prior to Kirchberg and Irwin closing the game's scoring.

Game 2 – No. 13 Brown 13, No. 15 Navy 9
Irwin netted a season-high four goals as No. 13 Brown won its second game of the day with a 13-9 victory over No. 15 Navy in the team's final game at Bucknell on the weekend.
Murvitz-Lahav scored three goals while Kirchberg compiled two goals and two steals. Gallas posted a goal, three assists, and two steals while senior Will Klein (Pasadena, Calif.) notched four ejections drawn, two field blocks, and a goal.
Wyatt charted a goal and two field blocks, Carroll dished out two assists, and freshmen Travis Bouscaren (Cambridge, Mass.) and Santiago Nunez (Miami, Fla.) contributed a goal and two steals respectively.
In net, junior goalie Luke Weiser (Los Alamitos, Calif.) logged 12 saves, two assists, and one steal.
The Bears jumped out to a 4-0 lead midway through the first quarter off two goals from Irwin and tallies from Murvitz-Lahav and Bouscaren. Navy found the back of the net twice before the period expired to pull within 4-2 after one.
In the second stanza, Brown extended its lead back to four goals at 6-2 off of markers from Murvitz-Lahav and Irwin. The Midshipmen again scored the quarter's last two goals as Brown led 6-4 at halftime.
Navy cut the margin to 6-5 early in the third quarter before the Bears scored four unanswered goals to snag a 10-5 advantage. Gallas started the run before Wyatt, Kirchberg, and Klein scored in order.
Brown carried a 10-7 lead into the fourth quarter where Kirchberg, Murvitz-Lahav, and Irwin netted a goal apiece to help the Bears secure the win.
