
Volleyball Drops Decisions at UTEP, New Mexico State

EL PASO, Texas and LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Brown University volleyball dropped a 3-2 decision at UTEP prior to falling at New Mexico State, 3-0, at the NMSU-UTEP Borderland Classic on Friday at the Don Haskins Center and Pan American Center respectively.
The Bears (2-4) won two sets in extra points before suffering a 3-2 (24-26, 25-15, 25-22, 25-27, 15-11) setback to the Miners (3-5) in the team's first contest of the day. In the nightcap, Brown lost to the Aggies (7-3), 3-0 (25-20, 25-9, 25-17) after traveling across the Texas-New Mexico border.
Freshman Sabrina Stillwell (Laguna Beach, Calif.) paced the Bears with 26 total kills between the two matches, recording a career-high 19 kills at UTEP and adding seven kills at NMSU.
Next, Brown continues play at the Borderland Classic tomorrow with matches against Robert Morris (4:30 p.m. ET) and Denver (9:00 p.m. ET). Both contests will take place at New Mexico St.
Match 1: UTEP 3, Brown 2 (24-26, 25-15, 25-22, 25-27, 15-11)
EL PASO, Texas – Junior Payton Smith and Stillwell set career highs with 20 and 19 kills respectively, but Brown fell to UTEP, 3-2 (24-26, 25-15, 25-22, 25-27, 15-11), at the Don Haskins Center on Friday afternoon.
The Bears won sets one and four in extra points, but the host Miners took the second and third frames prior to winning the match in the decisive fifth set.
Smith (Atherton, Calif.) tied her career high with 20 kills on .372 hitting to go with four blocks while Stillwell established a career high in kills and registered double-digit kills for the fifth time in as many matches to open her collegiate career.
Sophomore libero Melissa Cairo (Hillsborough, Calif.) recorded a career-best 31 digs while senior captain Shannon Frost (Santa Ana, Calif.) notched 22 digs and eight kills. Sophomore Shirin Tooloee chipped in 10 digs, and freshman Courtney Palm (St. Louis, Mo.) tallied a team-high five blocks.
At the setter spot, junior Sarah Lucenti (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) handed out 26 assists, and senior Rachele Killian (Laguna Beach, Calif.) totaled 20 assists.
The Bears won set one in extra points, 26-24, fending off a late charge from the hosts. Brown opened with a 9-3 lead before UTEP used a 9-2 run to pull ahead 12-11. The visitors scored four straight points to take a 16-13 edge and still led at 22-19. The Miners held set point at 24-23 before the Bears scored points on a block, kill, and ace to close the set. Smith landed six kills in the frame while Cairo and Frost tallied 10 and nine digs apiece.
In set two, UTEP opened the frame with a 12-5 advantage. Behind a 7-1 streak, Brown pulled to within 13-12. The Miners took an 18-13 lead with a 4-0 burst and won the stanza's last six points for the 25-15 set win. Smith and Cairo compiled three kills and six digs respectively in the set.
Set three saw the Miners take an early 9-3 lead and maintain a similar edge up to 18-11. The Bears worked their way back into the frame, cutting their deficit to two points at 21-19 before the hosts closed the set with a 25-22 win. In the stanza, Stillwell posted six kills, Smith charted five kills, and Cairo had nine digs.
Brown tied the match at two sets apiece with a 27-25 win in extra points in set four. The Bears scored seven unanswered points early in the set to take an 11-6 edge and still led at 18-13. UTEP tied the score at 18-18, and the two teams played point-for-point over the remainder of the set. The Bears closed the frame with a pair of kills and a block, and Stillwell recorded eight kills in the set.
Both sides matched the other for the majority of set five with neither team holding a lead larger than two points until UTEP gained a 14-11 edge. The Miners won the decisive set, 15-11, scoring the stanza's final five points.
Match 2: New Mexico St. 3, Brown 0 (25-20, 25-9, 25-17)
LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Stillwell and junior Emma Thygesen (Menlo Park, Calif.) each logged seven kills as Brown lost to New Mexico State, 3-0 (25-20, 25-9, 25-17), on Friday night at the Pan American Center.
Frost led the Bears with 10 digs while Killian and Lucenti distributed 14 and 11 assists respectively. Freshman Francie Holte (Laguna Beach, Calif.) added seven digs.
In set one, the Bears staked themselves to an early 8-4 advantage before the hosts utilized a 10-2 run to pull ahead at 14-10. Brown trimmed its deficit to one at 18-17, but NMSU countered with a 6-1 run en route to the 25-20 set win.
New Mexico State carried its momentum over to set two, winning the stanza's first five points. Brown responded with three straight points before the Aggies recorded 11 unanswered points to take a 16-3 lead on the way to a 25-9 victory in the frame.
Both teams played to within three points of one another over set three's first half until the Aggies grabbed a 15-11 advantage. Brown remained within 18-15, but New Mexico State won seven of the last nine points to take a 25-17 win in the final frame.
