DETERMINING A CHAMPION
The Ivy League champion in women's rowing is determined by the fastest boat in the first varsity eight grand final at the Ivy League Championship, an event that began in the spring of 2012. Previously, the Ivy League champion was determined by the fastest Ivy boat in the first varsity eight grand final at the Eastern Association of Women's Rowing Colleges (EAWRC) Sprints from 1974 to 2011.
The winning varsity eight boat gives the team the Ivy League's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship, allowing that team's first varsity eight, second varsity eight, and varsity four automatic entry to the national championship. The NCAA Championship provides for 11 automatic qualifiers and 11 at-large bids.
BRUNO AT THE IVY CHAMPIONSHIP
Brown has claimed eight Ivy titles all time with the first coming in 1988 and the most recent occurring in 2008. The Bears took home the championship in 1988, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2008.
The Bears won the team trophy at the Ivy Championship last year while the first varsity eight came in second. The second varsity eight, A varsity four, and B varsity four each won gold medals. In 2013, Brown came in third as a team, sixth in the first varsity eight, and first in the second varsity eight as well as all three varsity four boats. At the inaugural championship in 2012, the Bears placed fifth as a team and fifth in the first varsity eight.
LAST TIME OUT
No. 4 Brown won all three NCAA events – the first varsity eight, second varsity eight, and varsity four – to take the Nat & Anne Case Cup at No. 10 Yale in the regular season finale for both teams on the Housatonic River on April 27.
In the most tightly contested race of the day, the Bears just edged the Bulldogs in the varsity four. With both teams matching each other stroke for stroke, Brown eked past Yale by 0.3 seconds in a photo finish, 6:43.5 to 6:43.8.
Brown's varsity eight won its race with a time of 6:02.1, outdistancing Yale (6:07.6) by over five seconds. The second varsity eight won by open water, clocking in at 6:10.1 and finishing 10 seconds ahead of Yale (6:20.4).
IN THE POLLS
Brown checks in at No. 5 in the latest CRCA Coaches Poll from May 12, standing as the top-ranked crew in the Ivy League. Two other schools rank in the top 10 in No. 9 Princeton and No. 10 Yale. Another pair of schools cracks the top 20 in No. 15 Radcliffe and No. 18 Cornell.
In the Region I rankings, Brown ranks first, Princeton second, Yale third, Radcliffe fourth, and Cornell and Penn sit in a tie for fifth.
