
Wrestling Beats Johnson & Wales, 27-15, Falls to Harvard, 21-17

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Seniors Billy Watterson and Ophir Bernstein as well as sophomores Justin Staudenmayer and Steven Galiardo each won twice as Brown University wrestling beat Johnson & Wales, 27-15, and fell to Harvard, 21-17, in a tri-meet at Harvard's Malkin Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Bears (4-9, 2-6 EIWA) beat the Wildcats (18-7) in their second match of the day after dropping a narrow decision to the host Crimson (3-7, 1-6 EIWA).
Against their Ivy League and EIWA rivals, Watterson (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) won via forfeit, Staudenmayer (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) won via technical fall, and Bernstein (Allen, Texas) and Galiardo (Chicago, Ill.) each took wins through decision.
Junior Anthony Finocchiaro (Canastota, N.Y.), senior Ricky McDonald (Carson City, Nev.), and classmate Sebastien Levin (Amenia, N.Y.) each added wins in the nightcap against JWU.
Next, Brown hosts Columbia on Feb. 21 at 1 p.m. for Senior Day.
Meet 1 – Harvard 21, Brown 17
Brown held a 17-13 lead heading into the final two bouts, but Harvard University notched eight points between 197 and 285 lbs. to earn a 21-17 win.
Galiardo collected Brown's first points of the day after Watterson's forfeit victory as he defeated Patrick Hogan at 149 lbs., 11-6. He registered three takedowns and an escape in the first period to gain a 7-4 edge. He tacked on a pair of takedowns in the third to help put the Bears ahead 9-7 in the team score.
Staudenmayer followed with a 16-0 technical fall triumph at 157 lbs. to extend Brown's lead to 14-7. In the first period, he registered a takedown and tallied near fall points on six occasions to take the win.
At 184 lbs., Bernstein topped Michael Mocco, 5-1, to put Brown up 17-13. He charted a takedown in both the first and third periods and added an escape in the intermediate stanza.
Harvard won the next two bouts via major decision to win the match.

Meet 2 – Brown 27, Johnson & Wales 15
Seven different Bears won their bouts, and Bernstein recorded his team-leading 10th pin of the season to propel Brown to a 27-15 win over crosstown foe Johnson & Wales University.
Watterson began the match with a 2-0 win over Bobby Jordan at 125 lbs. before Finocchiaro notched a 5-1 victory over Michael Ferinde at 141 lbs.
Galiardo gave Brown a 9-6 lead in the team score with a 4-3 win over Joe Gaccione, and Staudenmayer tallied his second technical fall of the day at 157 lbs. to push Brown to a 14-6 advantage in the team score.
At 174 lbs., McDonald garnered a 12-4 win via major decision over Ken Dougherty before Bernstein gained a fall over Michael Label in 3:47 at 184 lbs.
Levin posted the Bears' last win of the day with a 3-0 victory over Andrew Cavanna at 197 lbs
