BURLINGTON, Vt. – Lake Superior State goalie Nick Kossoff made 28 saves to lead the Lakers to a shutout victory over the Brown men's hockey team, 3-0, on the second and final day of the UVM Catamount Cup Wednesday afternoon at Gutterson Fieldhouse.
Brown (3-8-3, 2-5-2 ECAC) downed Colgate, 7-5, in the opener of the tournament on Tuesday. Lake State improved to 7-11-4 overall with the win. Vermont won the tournament with a pair of wins over LSSU and Colgate, while Nick Lappin (Geneva, Ill.) was named to the All-Tournament Team after a five-point performance in the opener.
Tim Ernst (Pickering, Ontario) made 20 saves for the Bears. Lappin and sophomore Charlie Corcoran (New Canaan, Conn.) led the way with four shots apiece.
Lake State struck first at 14:57 in the opening period, midway through the first power play of the game, when Gage Torrel hit a one-timer past Ernst for the early lead. Gus Correale set up the goal for the primary assist and Mitch Hults also picked up an assist.
Brown outshot the Lakers in the first period, 11-8.
Anthony Nellis padded the Lakers' lead at 9:40 of the middle period with a blast from the right circle. Brown held a 20-14 edge in shots at the second intermission, and had a few good chances near the end of the period, but Kossoff turned away both Tommy Marchin (Algonac, Mich.) and Nick Lappin to preserve the two-goal advantage.
Despite back-to-back Brown penalties five minutes into the third period, the penalty kill unit kept the Lakers off the board, while Tyler Bird (Andover, Mass.) and Mark Naclerio (Milford, Conn.) had a pair of shorthanded opportunities during the stretch.
Lake Superior State increased the pressure with five minutes remaining, but Ernst highlighted a series of stops when he lunged forward with a diving save to keep the Bears within striking distance. After Brown pulled Ernst with just under two minutes left to play, Correale scored the empty netter to secure the shutout.
Brown outshot the Lakers overall, 28-23.
Brown will host No. 1 Providence College on Sunday, Jan. 3 in the second game of the 30th annual Mayor's Cup series.
