PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University women's soccer senior Erin Katz and freshman goalkeeper Christine Etzel have earned Ivy League Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week honors respectively, the conference office announced on Monday.
Katz and Etzel helped the Bears beat Yale, 2-1, on Saturday in the finale for Brown's Class of 2016 and for 39-year head coach Phil Pincince. The Bears closed the season with a three-game Ivy winning streak.
A native of Montgomery, Ala., Katz tallied a three-point day, scoring the game-winning goal in the 18th minute and recording an assist against the Bulldogs. Katz redirected a ball from senior Michelle Jolson (Wyoming, Ohio) at 17:14 to give the Bears a 2-0 lead. In the 13th minute, she played a pass back to junior Carly Gould (Hampton Falls, N.H.) who put Brown up 1-0.
A native of Madison, Conn., Etzel made three saves and did not allow a goal in the run of play against the Bulldogs. She gave up just one goal on a penalty kick in the match and turned aside both of the Bulldogs' shots on goal in the second half.
For the season, Katz concluded the year second on the team in both points (10) and goals (four) while Etzel went 7-6-2 with four shutouts, a 0.99 GAA, and a .833 save percentage.
Etzel earned Rookie of the Week laurels for the third time this season, becoming the first Bear to win the award three times in a year since Kathryn Moos '07 in 2003. Brown took a clean sweep of the Ivy weekly awards for the first time since Oct. 27, 2003 when Moos won both Player and Rookie of the Week. Katz became Brown's first solo winner of the Player of the Week Award since MC Barrett '14 on Oct. 24, 2011.
