PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's hockey team was defeated by No. 9/9 Harvard, 5-1, in ECAC play on Saturday at Meehan Auditorium. Sophomore Sam Donovan (New Brighton, Minn.) scored for Brown, recording her first goal of the season in the third period.
For the second straight game, the Bears (0-6-0, 0-4-0 ECAC) skated to a 0-0 score in the first period. Sophomore Julianne Landry (Hanover, Mass.) recorded 11 saves in the stanza. Brown had solid offensive opportunities towards the end of the period. The Bears also tallied three shots while on the power play but were unable to get any of them past Harvard goalie Molly Tissenbaum, who registered seven saves.
Harvard (3-1-1, 3-1-1 ECAC) tallied their first goal of the game at 3:26 in the second as Sydney Daniels gained possession off of a turnover and skated straight to net for the score. Following a faceoff, the Crimson added another goal, at 14:31, for a 2-0 lead when Lexie Laing scored, with Grace Zarzecki picking up the assist.
With just under a minute remaining in the period, Brown pulled Landry following a timeout and skated with an extra man. Following a faceoff in the winding seconds of the period, freshman Bridget Carey (Weymouth, Mass.) had possession of the puck and circled back, dishing the puck off to junior Maddie Woo (Plymouth, Minn.) who fired a shot that was blocked near the net. Junior Erin Conway (Jackson, Mich.) was near the net to collect the rebound and fired a shot back but the time expired just before the puck crossed the line for no goal and a 2-0 score heading into the second intermission. Landry made 14 saves in the period including many impressive glove saves.
The Crimson opened the third period with two straight goals from Audrey Warner (1:18) and a power-play tally from Briana Mastel (4:19), to take a 4-0 advantage.
Donovan notched her goal at the 16:24 mark when senior Alli Rolandelli (Minnetonka, Minn.) passed the puck up ice and Carey soon dished it to Donovan who finished in front of the net, bringing the score to 4-1.
Harvard put in its fifth goal just before the end of the game, at 19:44, with a tally from Kate Hallett.
Landry registered a career-high 41 saves, which included 16 alone in the third period, in 59:02 of play, while Tissenbaum of Harvard recorded 22 stops.
Brown took a season-high 23 shots in the game while Harvard registered 46.
In a game of very few penalties, Harvard capitalized on its lone opportunity, going 1-for-1 on the power play while Brown went 0-for-2.
The Bears next host Sacred Heart in a non-conference game in Brown's only game next weekend, on Saturday, Nov. 14 at 4:00 p.m. at Meehan Auditorium.
