Wrestling Holds Intra-squad Brown & White Wrestle-Offs

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University wrestling held an intra-squad meet to mark the unofficial start of its 2015-16 season with the Brown Team edging the White Team, 14-13, in the Brown & White Wrestle-Offs at the Pizzitola Sports Center on Saturday night.
The meet comprised eight of the 10 weight classes with the white team taking four bouts and the brown team gaining four bout wins.
Starting at 133 lbs., sophomore Zeke Salvo (Baltimore, Md.) earned a major decision, 12-2 win over classmate Jimmy Bell (Greenwich, Conn.). At 141 lbs., sophomore transfer Charlie Banaszak (Bethesda, Md.) beat senior Anthony Finocchiaro (Canastota, N.Y.), 7-1, to give the white team a 7-0 lead.
Junior Steven Galiardo (Chicago, Ill.) posted the brown team's first bout win, besting freshman Travis Vasquez (Fair Lawn, N.J.) via technical fall, 15-0, at 149 lbs. Junior Justin Staudenmayer (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) pushed the white team's edge to 10-5 with a 4-2 win over classmate William McDonald (Carson City, Nev.) at 157 lbs.
The Brown team pulled within 10-8 at 165 lbs. as junior Richard Muniz (Corona, Calif.) defeated freshman Jon Viruet (Springfield, Mass.), 3-1, but the white side maintained a 13-8 advantage as junior Galloway Thurston (St. Ignace, Mich.) topped sophomore Andrew LaBrie (Exeter, R.I.), 13-9, at 174 lbs.
At 184 lbs., sophomore Austin Pfarr (Marysville, Ohio) gained an 8-2 win over freshman Christian Murabito (Saratoga, Calif.), and freshman Tucker Ziegler (Myersville, Md.) completed the brown team's comeback with an 8-3 triumph over sophomore Josh Durso-Finley (Lawrenceville, N.J.).
Next, Brown will begin intercollegiate competition on Sunday, Nov. 15 at the East Stroudsburg Open.
