Wrestling Gains Five Place-winners, Finishes Fifth at Navy Classic

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Brown University wrestling earned five place-winners, including a trio of second-place finishers, and finished fifth as a team at the 38th Annual Navy Classic on Saturday at Wesley Brown Field House.
Juniors Steven Galiardo (Chicago, Ill.) and Justin Staudenmayer (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) and sophomore Christian LaBrie (Exeter, R.I.) each placed second in the 149-pound, 157-pound, and 165-pound weight classes respectively.
Sophomore Andrew LaBrie (Exeter, R.I.) came in third place at 174 pounds, and classmate Zeke Salvo (Baltimore, Md.) finished fifth at 133 pounds.
As a team, the Bears scored 82.5 points to place fifth out of 10 teams, finishing ahead of EIWA rival Bucknell and four other schools. Princeton won the tournament with 139.0 points.
Four of Brown's five place-winners also placed at last week's East Strodusburg Open as Andrew LaBrie won the 174-pound weight class, Galiardo came in second at 149 lbs., Salvo came in second at 133 lbs., and Staudenmayer finished fifth at 157 lbs. Last year at the Navy Classic, Staudenmayer won the 157-pound division.
Galiardo, Staudenmayer, and Christian LaBrie each won three consecutive bouts to reach the finals in their respective weight classes. Andrew LaBrie took four straight consolation bouts to gain third place at 174 lbs. Salvo won twice to reach the semifinals before pulling out a victory in the fifth-place match at 133 lbs.
Next, Brown will compete at the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev., from Friday, Dec. 4 to Saturday, Dec. 5.
