GALES FERRY, Conn. – Brown University equestrian earned second place with 35 points at the University of Rhode Island IHSA Show on Saturday at Mystic Valley Hunt Club, trailing only the hosts which tallied 49 points.
The Bears now rank second in IHSA Zone 1 Region 1 with 177 points through five shows, behind Rhode Island, which has amassed 182 points on the year. Brown has placed either first or second in all five of its shows on the season.
Four different Brown student-athletes garnered first-place finishes and blue ribbons on the day including junior captain Kabisa Baughen (Sarasota, Fla.) in open fences, senior captain Alisa Berg (St. Louis, Mo.) at her debut in intermediate fences, senior Alexa Van Hattum (Grand Rapids, Mich.) in novice fences, and senior Samantha Spear (Chester Springs, Pa.) in open flat.
In open fences, sophomore Sara Nordstrom (Medina, Wash.) and classmate Victoria Flagg (Great Falls, Va.) placed third and second respectively in her class in support of Baughen's blue ribbon. Senior Tess Carter (Tucson, Ariz.) came in fourth as did Spear.
Berg paced the Bears in intermediate fences after pointing out of novice fences last spring with sophomore Annaliese Fries (Kirkland, Wash.) complementing her with a second-place finish.
In novice fences, sophomore Lily Hertling (Paris, France), classmate Alejandra Zamora (New Canaan, Conn.), and Van Hattum placed second, fourth, and first in their respective classes. Van Hattum competed for the first time in an over fences class after pointing out of walk-trot-canter last spring.
Moving to open flat, Spear took first while Baughen gained third. Carter and Nordstrom placed third and sixth respectively. Senior captain Elena Buchsbaum (Madison, N.J.) led Brown with a second-place finish in intermediate flat, and Fries pinned fifth in her class.
For novice flat riders, Flagg came in third, Zamora fifth, and Hertling fourth. Junior Clara Mae Maynard (Chilmark, Mass.) and sophomore Caroline Marks (Seattle, Wash.) each paced the group with a pair of second-place showings.
In walk-trot-canter, sophomore Elizabeth Rao (Andover, Mass.) and senior Noel Park (Baton Rouge, La.) each came in fifth while senior Tori Sasaki (London, England) and junior Roshan Moazed (Brookline, Mass.) each garnered second-place finishes. Park made her debut at W-T-C after pointing out of walk-trot last week, and Sasaki pointed herself out of W-T-C and into the novice categories with her performance.
Finishing with walk-trot, sophomores Keri Brooks (Yigo, Guam), Genoveva Eguiguren (Quito, Ecuador), and Natalia Moriel (Ciudad Juarez, Mexico) placed second, fifth, and third respectively.
Next, Brown will compete at the Rhode Island College IHSA Show on Saturday, Nov. 14.
