PRINCETON, N.J. – Senior Rachele Killian posted her fourth double-double in her last five matches with 14 assists and 11 digs, but Brown University volleyball fell at Princeton University, 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-23), on Saturday night at Dillon Gym.
The Bears (10-14, 4-8 Ivy) nearly took the first and third sets, but the host Tigers (13-8, 8-4 Ivy) prevailed in each frame to take the match in straight sets.
Killian (Laguna Beach, Calif.) totaled her fifth double-double of the season and her second of the weekend while freshman Elisa Merten (Woodside, Calif.) tallied 10 digs and seven kills.
Sophomore Shirin Tooloee (San Jose, Calif.) compiled eight kills, seven digs, and four blocks, sophomore Melissa Cairo (Hillsborough, Calif.) registered a team-high 12 digs, junior Sarah Lucenti (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) contributed 12 assists, and freshman Sabrina Stillwell (Laguna Beach, Calif.) had seven kills.
Neither side could gain a significant advantage for much of the first set as Brown held a 20-17 lead late in the period. The Tigers then took the set's final eight points to gain the 25-20 set win. Stillwell and Merten notched three kills and five digs respectively in the stanza.
Brown and Princeton remained tied at 14-14 midway through set two before the hosts grabbed the next five points to gain a 19-14 lead. The visitors could pull no closer than three points the rest of the way as the Tigers garnered a 2-0 set advantage with a 25-18 win in the frame. Killian charted six digs in the set.
The Bears staked themselves to a 13-9 edge early in set three prior to a 5-0 run from Princeton, which gave the team a 14-13 lead. Brown tied the score at 17-17 and again at 22-22, but the Tigers won three of the set's last four points to take the match. Tooloee and Cairo logged four kills and eight digs respectively in the final game.
For Princeton, Cara Mattaliano led all players with 19 kills, Kendall Peterkin added 15 kills, Claire Nussbaum distributed a match-best 37 assists, and Sarah Daschbach posted a match-high 16 digs.
Brown dropped the season series to Princeton after the Bears fell to the Tigers, 3-2, at home on Oct. 16 despite a comeback attempt.
Next, Brown completes regular season play with home matches against Dartmouth (Friday, Nov. 13, 7 p.m.) and Harvard (Saturday, Nov. 14, 5 p.m.).
