
Volleyball Falls to Dartmouth in Five Sets, 3-2

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore Shirin Tooloee tied her career high with 17 kills, but Brown University women's volleyball fell to Dartmouth College, 3-2 (19-25, 25-23, 25-18, 20-25, 15-10), in Ivy League action on Friday night at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
The Bears (10-15, 4-9 Ivy) took the first set and forced a deciding fifth set with a fourth-set victory, but the visiting Big Green (12-10, 9-4 Ivy) pulled out the final stanza.
Tooloee (San Jose, Calif.) led all performers with her 17 kills while freshman Sabrina Stillwell (Laguna Beach, Calif., supported her with 16 kills – her eighth match this year with 15 or more kills. Senior Shannon Frost (Santa Ana, Calif.) posted her fourth double-double of the year with 11 kills and 17 digs, and junior Payton Smith (Atherton, Calif.) added 10 kills.
Defensively, sophomore Melissa Cairo (Hillsborough, Calif.) led the team in digs with 28, giving her 22 matches with 10 or more digs recorded on the season. Senior Rachele Killian (Laguna Beach, Calif.) tallied a match-high 33 assists to go with nine digs, and freshman Elisa Merten (Woodside, Calif.) and junior Sarah Lucenti (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) tacked on 10 digs and 18 assists respectively.
Brown clamed the first set, 25-19, as Tooloee and Smith paced the Bears with four kills apiece. Brown had total command in the first set, holding the lead the rest of the way after starting out tied, 1-1.
The second set was a back-and-forth battle with 11 ties and three lead changes, with Dartmouth ultimately capturing the set, 25-23, to tie the match 1-1. Tooloee again added offensive power for the Bears, this time posting seven kills.
Dartmouth took a 2-1 set lead with a 25-18 third-set win. The Big Green had a balanced attack in the set, having eight players register a kill. Stillwell had a set-best four kills.
The Bears battled back to tie the match 2-2 with a 25-20 win in the fourth set. Brown was down early and was able to tie the set at eight. After trading points, the Bears gained a 13-12 lead and carried their momentum and held the advantage the rest of the way. For the third time in the match, Tooloee led the Bears in kills in a set, with five.
With the score tied 7-7 in the fifth and deciding set, Dartmouth scored three straight points to take a 10-7 lead and held Brown to only three more points in the stanza, to win the set 15-10 and the match 3-2.
Emily Astarita led Dartmouth in kills with 13 while Jordan Cornwell led them in digs with 24. Kayden Cook recorded a team-high 21 assists.
