
Women's Hockey to Play in 21st Annual Mayor's Cup at Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's hockey team and Providence College will play in the 21st installment of the Mayor's Cup on Saturday, Nov. 28 at Schneider Arena, starting at 1:00 p.m. Brown captured the 20th Mayor's Cup on Nov. 28, 2014 at Meehan Auditorium in a 2-1 win. Junior Monica Elvin made 33 saves while sophomore Sam Donovan recorded the game-tying goal. The series between the inter-city rivals began in 1996 with Brown coming away victorious, 4-3, on January 24. The Bears lead the all-time series, 10-7-3. In the last 10 overall meetings, Providence holds a slight edge with a record of 5-4-1, however, in those last 10 meetings, the Bears hold a 3-2-0 advantage over the Friars when playing at Schneider Arena.

SCOUTING PROVIDENCE
Providence recently played on Wednesday, Nov. 25, falling to No. 2/2 Boston College, 9-1, to bring its record to 3-10-0 overall and 3-6-0 in the Hockey East. The Friars' three wins this season have come against New Hampshire, 5-4 (Nov. 7) and 4-1 (Nov. 22), and Vermont, 4-1 (Nov. 13). Sophomore Brooke Boquist and freshman Christina Putigna lead the team with 11 points apiece. Boquist is tied with sophomore Madison Sansone for the team lead in goals with eight. Putigna has a team-best in assists with nine. All four goalies on PC's roster have seen action in net, with freshman Madison Myers appearing in the most, at eight games with seven starts. The rookie has compiled a 3.31 goals against average and a .885 save percentage. So far this year the Friars are 1-3-0 when playing at Schneider Arena, with their one win coming on Nov. 7 versus New Hampshire (5-4).
BROWN VS. PROVIDENCE LAST SEASON
In addition to the 2-1 Mayor's Cup win at Meehan Auditorium on Nov. 28 by Brown, the Bears and Friars also met on Nov. 29, with PC coming away with a 4-2 victory at Schneider Arena. For the Brown returners, sophomore Sam Donovan scored in the first game while junior Maddie Woo recorded two goals in the second game.
LAST TIME OUT
Brown split last weekend's series at RIT, going 1-1-0 against the Tigers. Freshman Leah Olson scored her first collegiate goal in Brown's 5-1 loss on Friday night, and had the game-winning goal in Saturday's series finale, a 2-1 win. Olson also set-up junior Maddie Woo for the game-tying goal in the second period, after Brown was trailing 1-0 at the end of the first. Olson's game-winner came at 16:58 of the third period, with freshman Bridget Carey and Woo assisting on the tally. Sophomore Julianne Landry made 22 saves for her first-career win, including 13 in the final period. All three of the Bears' goals on the weekend were power-play scores.

The Bears will next compete in two away games, with the first one at Union on Friday, Dec. 4 at 3:00 p.m. and the second contest at Rensselaer on Saturday, Dec. 5 at 3:00 p.m.
OLSON TABBED ECAC ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Freshman Leah Olson was named ECAC Rookie of the Week after scoring two goals and adding an assist in a 1-1-0 weekend for the Bears, the conference announced on Tuesday, Nov. 24. The award marks the second straight ECAC honor by Brown, as sophomore Sam Donovan was named ECAC Player of the Week on Tuesday, Nov. 17. Olson scored her first collegiate goal on Friday, Nov. 20 at RIT. The following day, the defender recorded the primary assist on junior Maddie Woo's game-trying goal in the second period, and then scored the game-winning goal at 16:58 in the third to lead the Bears to a come-from-behind 2-1 win at RIT.
TOP OF THEIR GAME
Freshman Bridget Carey, sophomore Sam Donovan and junior Maddie Woo have been together on the top line in seven of Brown's nine games and have produced 14 of the team's 27 points. Donovan leads the Bears in goals (4) while Woo has a team-best in assists (4).
OLSON LEADS ROOKIES
Freshman defender Leah Olson leads all freshmen and is tied for first on the team in points on the season with five (2G, 3A). Olson scored her first collegiate goal this past weekend at RIT, on Friday, Nov. 20. Her first-career assists took place on Saturday, Nov. 14 against Sacred Heart when she tallied two. Olson had a strong weekend at RIT (Nov. 20-21) scoring in the series' first game, and recording the primary assist on the game-tying goal and scoring the game-winning goal in the second game. Fellow freshman Bridget Carey is right behind Olson in points for the season, with four of her own, on two goals and two assists.
UNDERCLASSMAN SCORING
Brown's freshmen and sophomores make up 71% of the team's scoring, including 91% of the Bears' goals and 56% of the team's assists.
CAREER FIRSTS
Freshmen Leah Olson, Cara Najjar and Jenna Hewitt-Kenda recorded their first collegiate points in a 6-1 win over Sacred Heart on Saturday, Nov. 14. All three rookies collected assists in the game, with Olson recording two. Olson and Najjar teamed up for the assists on the game-winning goal while Hewitt-Kenda assisted Donovan's third goal that completed her hat trick.
For first collegiate goals, Bridget Carey scored her first at Maine on Oct. 24. while Olson scored hers at RIT on Friday, Nov. 20.
