
Hobbie, Kuakumensah and Spieth Lead Brown Over Holy Cross, 71-55

Providence, R.I.- JR Hobbie's 16 points led four Brown players in double figures as the Bears came away with their first win of the season, 71-55, over Holy Cross at the Pizzitola Sports Center. The win lifts Brown to 1-1 on the young season, while Holy Cross falls to 1-1 overall.
Most of Hobbie's points came from beyond the three-point arc with the junior guard connecting on 5-of-8 treys.
Brown senior center Cedric Kuakumensah (Worcester, MA) posted his second double in as many games. He shot 6-of-11 from the field in scoring 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.
Junior forward Steven Spieth (Dallas, TX) also posted a double-double for the Bears with 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field, and a career high 14 rebounds, including 10 boards in the second half. Spieth also added five assists.
Bears' freshman guard Corey Daugherty (Barrington, RI) came off the bench to play 27 minutes, responding with 13 points on a variety of long range shots and drives to the basket. Junior guard Tavon Blackmon (Upper Marlboro, MD) just missed a double-double with nine points and eight assists.
Brown out-rebounded the Crusaders by a 40-32 margin.
"We had two really good days of preparation for Holy Cross," said Brown head coach Mike Martin. "We received contributions from a lot of guys. Everyone did their jobs to earn a win over a well coached team."
Cullen Hamilton led the Crusaders with a game high 18 points. Karl Charles and Robert Champion netted 12 points each, while Malachi Alexander pulled down a team high 10 rebounds.
With the score tied, 30-30, Brown finished the half with a 5-1 run to pull ahead, 35-32 at intermission. Steven Spieth scored four of the five Brown points to end the half.
Holy Cross outscored the Bears 7-1 to open the second half and pull ahead by a 39-36 margin.
The Bears immediately responded with a 14-2 spurt behind four points each by Justin Massey (Cooper City, FL) and Daugherty to grab a 50-41 lead with 12:52 left in the game.
Holy Cross used a 1-3-1 half court trap to disrupt the Bears and got back in the game, trailing 50-48, on a basket by Hamilton with 10:27 remaining.
Brown responded with a Hobbie trey, a floater by Blackmon, and a Daugherty trey to take control, 58-50, with 8:29 left on the clock.
Coach Mike Martin's team travels to Niagara Falls on Wednesday, November 18 to face Niagara. Tip-of is 7:00 p.m.
