BOSTON – Sophomore Natalie Schudrowitz (Milwaukee, Wis.) placed fourth overall to pace the Brown women's cross country team to a third-place finish at the NCAA Northeast Regional Friday at Franklin Park in Boston.
Brown totaled 139 points and trailed only Providence (49) and Syracuse (92) for third place out of 38 teams, placing ahead of fellow Ivies Yale (5th), Harvard (6th), Columbia (7th), Dartmouth (8th) and Cornell (9th). Brown's third-place finish is the highest for the program since 2001.
"The women ran an inspired race today," said Tim Springfield, Director of Track & Field/Cross Country. "All the way through the line-up, they put themselves in the right spots and competed extremely hard. I was very proud of their performances. Natatlie did a great job leading the team and getting herself to her first national championship meet."
Schudrowitz completed the 6-kilometer course in a time of 20:39.2 to earn a spot at the NCAA Championship as an individual qualifier. The sophomore was 12th overall at the Ivy League Championships two weeks ago for Second Team All-Ivy accolades. Junior Taylor Worthy (Medfield, Mass.) also posted a top-20 finish, as she took 19th in a time of 21:14.9.
Rookie Carleen Jeffers (Ridgewood, N.J.) placed 26th at 21:28, followed by Victoria O'Neil (Boise, Idaho) at 42nd and Lucy Van Kleunen (Philadelphia, Pa.) at 48th in times of 21:50 and 21:53, respectively.
"We work at coming off of each experience as a team and looking for some way to become tougher," said women's head coach Mitchell Baker. "The team has really embraced that mission this fall, now marking two years in a row where we had a big up-tick in performance level when comparing the Ivy League race to the regional two weeks later.
Brown will await the at-large team selections for the NCAA Championship, which will be announced on Saturday.
The top 31 teams in the nation will meet at the 2015 NCAA Championship on Saturday, Nov. 21 at Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Kentucky. The women's race will start at noon followed by the men at 1 p.m.
