
Men's Soccer's Eales, Pereira to be inducted into New England Hall of Fame

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Former Brown men's soccer players Darren Eales '95 and Fred Pereira '77 are among the list of nine inductees at the New England Soccer Hall of Fame's 38th annual Induction Dinner on Sunday, Nov. 22, noon at the Ramada Inn in Seekonk, Mass.
In addition to Eales and Pereira, the list of inductees includes world soccer legend Eusebio, along with Shaun Bailey, Javier Centeno, Nancy Feldman, Angelo Passaretta, Frank Pearson and Douglas Tashjian.
Eales, one of most dominant strikers in the history of Brown men's soccer, was inducted into the Brown Athletic Hall of Fame in 2012. In his three-year career as a Bear, he scored 83 points (31g, 21a), becoming the fourth-leading point scorer in Brown history. He currently holds the school record for consecutive games with a point (12), and is tied for the record for consecutive games with a goal (9), along with Pereira.
The Cambridge, England native was named First Team All-Ivy for each of his three seasons at Brown, and was honored twice as a member of the Academic All-Ivy team. He put together his best season as a senior in 2014, when he helped the Bears finish the season as Co-Ivy League Champions with a record of 13-4-1 (5-1-1). He led the league in scoring with 16 goals and seven assists, and paced Brown to an NCAA tournament berth and a run to the quarterfinals. He became the first Brown men's soccer player to be named Ivy League Player of the Year. He was also named an NSCAA All-American, the USA Today Student-Athlete of the Year, the ECAC Male Athlete of the Year, GTE/COSIDA Academic All-American of the Year and was honored as the recipient of the NACDA/Disney Post-Graduate Scholarship.
After a professional career, Eales studied law at Cambridge and became a member of the bar in 2000. He was named Director of Football Administration at Tottenham Hotspur in 2010. On September 10, 2014, Eales was named the president of the Major League Soccer expansion club, Atlanta United FC.
Pereira left his name etched throughout the Brown men's soccer record book and was inducted into the Brown Hall of Fame in 1982. The Portugal native excelled at every level of soccer, both outdoors and indoors, earning six caps with the U.S. National Team.
A standout at Ludlow High School in Massachusetts, Pereira attended Brown after a post-graduate year at Suffield Academy. The dynamic forward was a three-time All-Ivy and All-New England selection with the Bears and ranks first in points (124), goals (47) and assists (30) all-time in program history. He was named First Team All-American as a sophomore and senior, and earned second team honors as a junior. He paced Brown to three-straight Ivy League titles and NCAA Tournament appearances, including a Final Four berth in 1975.
Pereira played on the U.S. Olympic team and the U.S. National Team in 1977, and then enjoyed several years of success in the North American Soccer League (NASL) and the Major Indoor Soccer League, before retiring in 1980 due to injuries. Pereira currently serves as an NCAA college soccer referee.
