
Volleyball Takes Set Two to Extra Points, Drops 3-0 Decision to URI

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Freshman Sabrina Stillwell recorded a match-high 15 kills, and Brown University volleyball took set two to extra points before falling to the University of Rhode Island, 3-0 (25-20, 32-30, 25-22) on Wednesday night at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
The Bears (8-9) nearly gained set two in overtime, earning set point on six occasions, but the visiting Rams (13-6) pulled out the frame and won set three for the straight-set victory.
Stillwell (Laguna Beach, Calif.) logged 15 or more kills in a match for the fifth time this year and for the first time in a three-set match. Junior Payton Smith (Atherton, Calif.) tallied six kills, four blocks, and three service aces.
Senior Shannon Frost (Santa Ana, Calif.) posted a team-high 12 digs, senior Rachele Killian (Laguna Beach, Calif.) distributed a team-best 20 assists, and sophomore libero Melissa Cairo (Hillsborough, Calif.) notched 11 digs.
The two teams went point-for-point for much of the first set with Brown garnering an 18-17 lead after a 5-1 run. URI countered to take a 22-18 edge and held on for the opening set win. Stillwell terminated on six kills in the period.
The Bears scored seven unanswered points behind the serve of Smith midway through set two to capture a 14-10 advantage. The hosts maintained at least a two-point edge and held set point at 24-20. After a URI timeout, the Rams compiled four straight points to tie the set at 24-24.
In extra points, Brown gained set point twice more while Rhode Island held set point on four occasions before a Smith kill knotted the frame at 30-30. The Rams then registered the last two points to gain a 2-0 set lead. Frost made seven digs in the set.
Brown gained a 14-7 lead to open the third set before URI registered a 6-0 spurt to pull within 14-13. The Bears still led at 18-15 prior to a 6-1 run for the visitors, which staked them to a 21-19 edge. The hosts tied it at 22-22, but the Rams closed the match with three straight points. Stillwell tallied five kills in the stanza, and Cairo had six digs.
For Rhode Island, Layne Self charted 14 kills, Callan Kinnan tossed out a match-high 38 assists, and Audrey Castro led all players with 15 digs.
Next, Brown returns to Ivy League play with a pair of home matches against Princeton (Friday, "Dig Pink" Match, 7 p.m.) and Penn (Saturday, 5 p.m.).
