
Klein Scores Four, No. 12 Men's Water Polo Bests MIT, 11-7

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Will Klein scored four goals, and classmate Matty Gallas tallied two goals and two assists as No. 12 Brown University men's water polo bested MIT, 11-7, on Saturday afternoon at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center.
The Bears (12-3, 6-0 CWPA North) used a 5-0 run spanning two quarters to turn a 3-3 tie into an 8-3 lead in gaining separation from the visiting Engineers (6-8, 2-5 CWPA North) in the CWPA Northern Division contest.
Klein (Pasadena, Calif.) led the Bears' offense from two meters while Gallas (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) notched the goal of the match with an expertly placed lob shot.
Sophomore Rico Burke (San Mateo, Calif.) registered two goals while junior Jake Wyatt (Corona Del Mar, Calif.) and sophomore Tyler Kirchberg (Orinda, Calif.) each dished out two assists.
Junior Warren Smith (Dallas, Texas) charted a goal and an assist while junior Luke Irwin (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) and freshman Santiago Nunez (Miami, Fla.) each tacked on a single goal. Sophomore Tommy Bush (Lafayatte, Calif.) chipped in an assist.
In net, junior goalkeeper Luke Weiser (Los Alamitos, Calif.) turned aside 11 shots from the Engineers, the No. 6-ranked team in Division III.
Klein opened the game's scoring with a 6-on-5 goal from the 2-meter mark before Gallas converted on a skip shot from just left of center. Irwin netted a goal from two meters off an assist from Wyatt in between a pair of MIT markers as Brown led 3-2 after one quarter.
MIT charted the second stanza's first goal prior to a tally from Smith from the left wing on the power play. Klein netted another 6-on-5 goal with an assist from Wyatt with 3:33 to play in the half to give the hosts a 5-3 edge at the break.
Brown scored the third frame's first three goals in taking an 8-3 lead as Nunez lifted the lid on the second half's scoring. Burke followed with a pair of tallies with helpers from Kirchberg and Bush as the Bears led 8-3 with 3:39 to go in the third. After an Engineer tally, Gallas scored on his lob shot to extend Brown's edge to 9-4 heading to the fourth quarter.
MIT posted two goals to initiate the final period's scoring before Klein answered on a turnaround shot from two meters off a pass inside from Gallas. MIT scored again with 54 seconds left, but Klein responded once more, netting a goal after corralling a rebound of his own shot with 33 seconds remaining.
Next, Brown continues CWPA Northern Division play at home tomorrow vs. Harvard at 6 p.m. in the team's "Breast Cancer Awareness Game."
