PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Brandon Pfeil (West Vancouver, British Columbia) and rookie Sam Lafferty (Hollidaysburg, Pa.) both scored second-period goals as the Brown men's hockey team tied Princeton, 2-2, in ECAC action Saturday afternoon at Meehan Auditorium.
Brown moves to 4-16-1 overall and 1-12-1 in the ECAC, while Princeton now stands at 3-15-2 on the season and 1-12-1 in the conference.
Sophomore Tim Ernst (Pickering, Ontario) made 28 saves in net for the Bears, while Colton Phinney stopped 31 shots on the other end.
After scoreless play for the first 19 minutes of the opening stanza, the Tigers jumped on the board with 50 seconds remaining, when Eric Robinson maneuvered around a player and ripped a shot from the high slot to push the visitors on top, 1-0.
Princeton held a slight edge in shots, 10-9, in the first period.
Pfeil scored on the power play to put the Bears on the board at 9:17 in the second period with his first tally of the season. Senior Matt Lorito (Oakville, Ontario) skated around a pair of Tigers and found Pfeil all alone, before the defenseman ripped a shot from in front of the blue line, as the puck trickled through traffic and into the back of the net to even the score, 1-1.
Brown continued to press and took a one-goal lead when Lafferty scored 42 seconds later for his second goal of the season. Joey de Concilys (St. Catharine's, Ontario) started the play when he poked the puck loose in the defensive end to push it up to the neutral zone, where Lafferty skated down the right side and launched a shot past Phinney for the 2-1 advantage.
Nevertheless, Jonathan Liau notched the equalizer at 15:47 to tie the game at 2-2 heading into the third period.
Brown outshot the Tigers by a 15-7 margin in the third period, but could not get a shot past Phinney, as the two teams headed into overtime.
Brown and Princeton both had a few chances in overtime, including an opportunity right in front by Massimo Lamacchia (Maple, Ontario) and a pair of shots from rookie Tim Lappin (Saint Charles, Ill.), but Phinney turned aside all three bids to preserve the even contest.
Brown won the battle for shots, 33-30, in the contest.
Brown returns to action on Friday, Feb. 6 when they host Dartmouth at 7 p.m. Tickets for all Brown men's hockey games can be purchased online, calling the Brown Athletics Ticket Office at (401) 863-2773, or walking up to the Box Office located in the Pizzitola Sports Center, open Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
