
Bernstein, Salvo Earn Pins, Wrestling Tops Sacred Heart, 37-6

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Ophir Bernstein earned a pin in 4:08, freshman Zeke Salvo won via fall at 3:28, and Brown University wrestling beat Sacred Heart, 37-6, in its Beauty in the Beast meet in conjunction with Brown gymnastics at the Pizzitola Sports Center on Saturday night.
Before a capacity crowd at the Pizzitola, Bernstein (Allen, Texas) picked up his team-leading ninth fall of the season as the Bears (2-4, 1-1 EIWA) won nine of 10 bouts against the visiting Pioneers (0-10, 0-6 EIWA).
Alongside the Bears' grapplers, Brown's gymnastics team took first place with a score of 192.375, defeating Bridgeport (191.500), Rhode Island College (177.925), and the University of Rhode Island (170.650).
Sophomore Justin Staudenmayer (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) won via technical fall for his team-best 24th victory of the year while sophomore William McDonald (Carson City, Nev.) and freshman Austin Pfarr (Marysville, Ohio) each gained a major decision win.
Senior 125-pounder Billy Watterson (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) staked Brown to a 3-0 start with a 12-6 win, tallying seven points in the second period. Salvo (Baltimore, Md.) followed with his pin at 133 pounds to give the Bears a 9-0 lead.
After a Sacred Heart win at 141, McDonald topped Brendan Goldup in the 149-pound weight class by major decision, 14-6. McDonald scored two takedowns in each period as part of his victory.
Staudenmayer continued the Bears momentum with a 16-0 win over Casey Mitchell at 157 pounds, and freshman 165-pounder Christian LaBrie (West Greenwich, R.I.) won 4-2 in his collegiate debut.
Senior Ricky McDonald (Carson City, Nev.) registered an 8-2 win at 174 pounds prior to Bernstein earning a fall in the 184-pound weight class.
Wrapping up the evening, Pfarr won 14-6 via major decision at 197 pounds, earning three near fall points on two occasions, and senior Sebastien Levin (Amenia, N.Y.) won in the heavyweight division, 9-3, over John Hartnett.
Next, Brown hosts Bucknell tomorrow at 4 p.m. to conclude its Alumni Weekend.
